I don't do a lot of curry, but I am wanting to make a curried grouper.
Help! Do any of you have a favorite curry powder that I might be able to find at most regular grocery stores? I am hoping for a lot of complex flavor and spices, but not too much heat.

Thanks!!!

PS: Since Thanksgiving is coming, I will put a plug in for the Spice Islands Poultry Seasoning. All the others that I have tried are made of a lot of cheap black pepper... The Spice Islands is the herbs. It is really good.

I use Mae Ploy. But it's a paste. Not sure if it comes in powder form. I love the green curry...so much flavor and heat. My family prefers the yellow..

If you have a trader Joe's nearby they have some really good jarred curry sauces.

What kind of curry? Indian? Thai?

For Thai I like some of the pastes they have. I used these a few years ago but honestly I don't like Thai - DH does. https://www.amazon.com/4oz-Green-Ye...id=1478625807&sr=8-6&keywords=red+curry+paste

I use a lot of different powders. Some from Penzeys, some from the supermarket.

Curry is very subjective - there's so many different flavors etc. You just have to try different things till you find something that suits you.

"Curry powder" is just a combination of various spices. It is said that every cook in India has her own combination.

If you like Spice Islands other spices, you can try the one they have. Read the ingredients on the bottle to see if it contains spices you think you'd like.

So you're looking for a turmeric-based yellow curry? It can be pretty easy to DIY with some turmeric powder. There are various types, like Indian or Thai curry recipes. Here's the first one I found:

If you have a South Asian grocery store near you, that might have more variety. I remember a small Halal grocery and meat market near where I was living for a short term work assignment, and they had a lot of options. Large Asian groceries might also have something.

If you don't have that, you might be able to find S&B or Kikkoman curry powders or bottled sauces at supermarkets or discount stores.

If you can get paste, I think it's better than powder. I keep red, green, and yellow in my fridge. I agree that Trader Joe's curry sauces are pretty decent for a quick meal.

Thanks!

What I am doing is kind of different, because it isn't an Asian Curry.
I do sometimes keep the Asian pastes.
I am wanting to try a Caribbean Curry Snapper or Grouper.
I was comparing Spice Islands and the Private Selections at Kroger.
The Private Selections won out. It was described as aromatic and warm, while the Spice Islands did mention red pepper.
Since this is fish, I am thinking a less hot and pungent curry.

Have to see how this turns out!
