What are some nationwide companies known for having good employee benefits, like insurance and 401k options?? For part time and full time status.

It really depends upon what type of work you are able to do.

There are many, many companies that offer good benefits.

You could search the Forbe's list for the 100 Best Companies to work for. They usually are based a lot on benefits like that amongst other things.

It's an interesting site. But not quite the info I was look for. More along the lines of little previous experience and maybe some college but no degree.

Like Home Depot, Cracker Barrel, Target, and those kinds of places offer good benefits for part timers and full timers.
Places like Gamestop, Party City, and Qdoba only offer benefits to people that are in management.

I was having a conversation with some one, and kept coming up blank. I hate it when that happens, when it's something that I used to know well.

Clerical or physical plant positions at private universities tend to be the mother lode of good benefits. The hours are much better than retail or food service, too.

A lot of the defense companies also have really good benefits. Lockheed, Raytheon, BAE and Boeing.

Those companies also have a lot of opportunities to grow and try different activities. You may also want to look at hotel industry. Marriott, Starwood.

Try applying at utility companies for customer service positions. It is usually a VERY high stress job, so the turnover rate is high, which in turn means that they hire more often.

I didn't know that! Good to know.

Credit unions are known for having excellent benefits. I don't know of any national credit unions, but all I have heard of have great benefits. I pay $250 a month for full health, vision, dental, short term, long term, and cancer insurance for my entire family of 4. I also have an excellent 401K package, 12 sick days per year, 12 vacation days per year (1st year, 15 days after 5 years), 14 paid holidays per year. They are very family oriented, and we even have a kids room at our office. If daycare is closed or something, we can bring our kids to work with us. Some employees have brought their kids to work all summer. In most back office departments, we are able to work flexible hours. As long as I work 40 hours a week and get my job done, my boss doesn't care what hours I work. (I took off 1/2 a day last week to take a dog to the vet, and I went in late today because I wanted to be at a store when they opened for a good sale.) I can not tell you how much I love working for my company.

hospitals! I work 20 hrs/week with all benefits except for disability insurance. Free concierge service, dry cleaning and barber on site, on site daycare (although not discounted) and employer match 401K. I'm really fortunate!

Publix is great to work for and they have wonderful benefits. It looks like you are in FL so you have lots to choose from. Publix is all over FL.

I love Publix, and they really are a good company. But I'm not in Florida, and neither is the person I was talking to.
I wonder if other grocery chains have the same benefits, although a lot of them don't seem to be family owned anymore either. I want to say Publix is a private company still.

Come from UPS. My husband is a loader for them, and works 20-25 hours a week. For that, we get FULL medical, dental, vision, life for zero dollars per month for our family of four. And, it's great benefits too. Excellent coverage that easily beats the coverage I had as a senior executive of a major corporation with over 200,000 employees...and I had to pay nearly $500 a month for them...and that was 4 years ago.

Now, with UPS, the hours are horrible (he starts as early as 2:00 AM during peak season, which is Christmas), the work is very physically demanding, and the pay is not great. However, the benefits we receive are easily worth $1500 a month, and that's conservative.

I used to work part time for Stop & Shop. The benefits were based on being in the union which you had to join. I paid $5 a week for the union after initial dues were paid which I think was $50. You could look in the union book and see raises for the next few years. I got paid holidays to start and double time if you worked on the holiday. In MA Sundays were time and a half but that may be because of our state laws. After one year I got free individual health insurance and paid personal days and sick leave. After two years I got vision and prescription benefits and maybe dental. Most of the time it wasn't my primary insurance so I never actually used it and I was single at the time so I don't know about family insurance. I was only guaranteed 15 hours of work a week and couldn't go over 30 except summer months.

In high school I was a dietary aide in a nursing home. They had a part time, full time and permanent part time. It was a non union place. Permanent part time meant guaranteed 20 hours a week, paid vacations, holidays (double time if worked) and sick days prorated based on average hours worked. Health insurance was offered but it wasn't free and I didn't need so never priced. There was a free onsite daycare which I thought was great but had no need for. There were shift differentials for nights and weekend days, weekend nights, and 3rd shift. On weekends I often started before 7 and got the 3rd shift premium even though I worked during the day. We got merit raises after the first few weeks, 6 months then twice a year but pretty much everyone got the same amount.

Just had to add that not all hospitals are the same. I worked for a hospital that gave no benefits for part timers under 40 hours and the benefits were not that good for full timers. We had none of the benefits you listed. Just posted as a heads up to ask what the benefits are because all hospitals are not alike.

I do not know if they still do, but years ago Sears had good benefits and they were available to part timers as well.

Sorry but NO! I have worked for Publix for 4 years part time and get practically no benefits.

Insurance - In order to be eligible for them you have to maintain 1500 hours, or 30 hours per week, for a year. If you drop below this, your plan gets dropped.

Also recently (within the past 6 months) Publix has reformatted a lot of their polices. Like, for example, they now have a 60/40 ratio per store of PT/FT staff. Basically so corporate doesn't have to dish out benefits. Sounds good so far?

Great let me tell you more - management is no longer allowed to give any employee more than a 10% raise per year. I personally haven't gotten a raise in over a year because I'm "topped out". Oh but the FTers who do the same EXACT job I'm doing get to "top out" at 3.00 more an hour than I do. Seems fair right?

I do get some benefits though. Like quarterly inventory bonuses. I think my last one was something like 100 dollars, whereas the first year I worked there they were around 300 each. Which I find funny because when our store first opened we were only clearing about 100-150k a week in sales. Now? Usually 450-500k. Hmm... Me thinks they've changed what us PTers get. Those silly corporate guys - they're so sneaky. I also get a 'Holiday' bonus. Which equals 8 hours pay, but with all the taxes ends up only being about 5 hours worth. But in order to get these you have to work for the company for a year AND maintain 1000 hours, roughly 20 a week. Oh OH and let's not forget "Sunday" pay. An extra dollar an hour. You mean 8 whole bucks (If you get a full shift that is)? YAY! I mean don't get me wrong - it's something. But not much.

If however you are lucky enough to get full time, which I've been asking for for a year and a half now. (They haven't hired anyone at FT at my store in 2 years by the way.) Then you get great benefits. 2 weeks vacation, 401k matching, stock options, so-so health insurance, etc. etc.

I think every company has it's good and bad points. Unfortunately though, seems like Publixs "bad points" are growing... Not a ton of jobs in my area. But I've been on the look out for about 6 months or so... :sad1:
