We bought a new better computer, it's running slower than our last computer. I have some free anti virus software that a friend put on. When ever he does that it's only a limited time for free. There are so many choices out there, so I am looking for the cheapest one that does the best. We use our computer for basics (email, check bank account, kids games, facebook, word doc). Any suggestions?

I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free and I haven't had any problems so far.

AVG Free.We have it on about 15 computers. Never had a virus and it's not the memory hogg others are. It will ask occassionally if you want to upgrade for $ but it isn't needed.

I've used AVG Free for the last few years and never had a problem.

Whatever you do, do NOT get Norton. It's a memory hog and I couldn't believe how much faster the computer ran when it was gone!

My DH is a tech guy for the school district and they use AVG as well

Microsoft Security Essentials. Very low resource footprint, scores high on virus tests, and is integrated with Windows Update.

Once installed you will never see (or hear) from it again unless you have an actual issue. Something AVG and Avast can't say. (Avast's default sound settings will scare the crap out of you) No yearly registrations either.

One thing that I like to use periodically is called MalwareBytes, which is free from malwarebytes.org. Ad-Aware is another good one that's free.

AVG Free!!:) A next door neighbor who is a retired IT professional recommended it and I will never go back to paying for anti virus.

I'm a network admin and I have Microsoft Security Essentials on all our home PC's and love it.

Here's a good example, I just uninstalled McAfee on my parent's computer and installed Microsoft Security Essentials. 5 minutes after installation it found a virus that McAfee had failed to detect. :thumbsup2

Microsoft Security essentials, AVG, and avast are all good free services we have AVG on our computer and have not had any problems with it.

Stay away from Norton and McAfee

If you want a paid service I would go with nod32 by eset it's $40 a year and the one I would pay for if I paid for antivirus.:lmao:

Hubby is an IT guy and uses both AVG free and Malawarebytes (also free) on every computer he touches. Has for years.

Consumer Reports recently (last two or three months) rated Avast best among the free antivirus programs.

Whatever you do stay away from McAfee.I paid for the antivirus and my computer was loaded with viruses and McAfee never detected them .

And another vote for AVG free. DH has been putting it on every computer for as long as I can remember paying attention to that stuff. We've never had a virus.
