best chance for connecting rooms at AKL

we’re planning a trip with my in laws and we’ve settled on AKL. ideally, we want to have connecting rooms (that’s what disney calls rooms with a door between them, right?).

we will book the same class, although we’re still deciding between standard and savanna view. are our chances better if we book 2 queens or a queen and a king? or is it just as much of a gamble either way?

oh I know it’s a request, and a common one too. I’m just curious if I can increase our chances with the room type we pick.

At AKL, king rooms are bookable. I’m just not sure if we should book two standard rooms or one standard and one standard king, for example. Maybe it’s just as likely to get connecting rooms either way?

well, yes. I know a suite is the only way to guarantee connecting rooms.

I am only asking if booking two queens vs a queen and a king makes connecting rooms any more likely. Are there more connecting pairs of either variety, that sort of thing.

Common sense would indicate there would be more queen/queen rooms than king rooms, but you would have to do more research to determine the ratio (wdwinfo.com doesn't provide that breakdown for this resort.)

The best option would be to make just one request: connecting rooms.

I would think queen rooms would be more common, but that is just a guess. I would go with whatever room types you prefer and make connecting rooms your only request. And go to the desk to check in and ask if the rooms connect. If they don't they will be the ones that can help you.

When you arrive, if you don't get connecting, you can mention at the desk that room type is less important to you than connecting rooms and ask if it is at all possible to be moved so that the rooms do connect. You can also ask to move rooms in the next day or two if they will have availability at a slightly later date than your arrival.

Without knowing how many rooms of each type are connecting at AKL, it is impossible to answer your question with any certainty. Your chances also depend upon how many people have booked connecting rooms for your arrival day, etc. I expect that priority would go to families that need connecting rooms to accommodate children without having to split parents, for example.

Personally, I would book 2 rooms with savanna view, and request connecting rooms. Having paid for the more expensive rooms, you can offer (at check in) to accept a down grade to pool or standard view if connecting rooms are available in one of the other categories.
In other words...If you seriously want connecting rooms more than anything else: We have found that you are more likely to get connecting if you are willing to accept any room category despite having paid for the highest priced category. More connecting rooms are available to you, for example, if you are willing to pay Savanna prices and stay in a standard room in order to get your request.

I would call and get the connecting rooms request added at booking plus use touring plans to send the request.

thank you! Over the years I’ve seen people ask questions I hadn’t even considered, and others answer with specific information from reliable sources. I thought if anyone would know this weird and specific thing, it would be someone on here.

I know there are more queen room than king, by a lot! The only time I’ve wanted connecting rooms before was at the contemporary, and it was a king/queen set of rooms. I’m sure that’s a influencing my perspective. But you’re right, queens are much more common.

Thanks for the ideas! We’ll definitely talk to someone at the desk when we arrive. Connecting rooms would be nice but I know they’re a difficult request to fulfill.

I really appreciate your post! I’m sure there are people who could use the connecting door more than us. We’re traveling with our toddler and my in laws, so connecting rooms means we can put our kid down in our room and socialize before sneaking in to sleep. It’s not necessary (if it was we would book a suite!), it would just be nice.

I really appreciate your creative ideas though. We’ll be there for 10 days, so it really wouldn’t be a problem to move rooms a couple days in, for example. I’m going to keep them in mind and see if we can up our chances that way.

Yeah, I can tell you at Pop (all kings connect to a queen, but there are also queen/queen connecting rooms) because there is a building floor plan online. I couldn't even find a count of king rooms for AKL.
