My thirty year old Electrolux died and they don't make them like that any more! Any suggestions - I need a power head for dog hair and bags for allergies in the family. A long retracting cord would great too. Thanks!

Have you thought about a Dyson handheld? They are great with pet hair, my son has an Italian Greyhound, beautiful dog but sheds like you wouldn't believe. We use ours when he comes to visit and it make quick work of his hair. It's the only vacuum I have found that handles the higher pile on my basement carpet as well, I've bought 3 different vacuums all self propelled trying to find one that isn't hard to push on it and the Dyson is the best. Comes with carpet and hard floor attachments. No bags to change, just empty the container. It's not cheap but well worth it.

Had a Dyson upright which lost suction! Went to a Miele and this is the best vacuum I've ever owned. Incredibly quiet too compared to the Dyson.

I also have a Miele and it works very well. It has a long retractable cord, is fairly lightweight and has a powerhead. I also bought the hepa filter for it as our house gets fairly dusty ( even though I dust often!)

Sometimes the places that fixes vacuum's may carry those older type vacuum's

when our dyson upright lost suction after about 3 years, I called & they sent me the replacement part free. that vacuum is now about 12 years old, and still going strong - it picks up EVERY little pet hair. one thing is that the upright is heavy, so we bought another for the other level of our house (over 5 years, and absolutely no loss of suction).
btw, top item on each of our kids Christmas lists once they moved out was a Dyson - smart kids :thumbsup2

I know someone who owns a sew and vacuum store. She said no way would she sell Dyson. In addition to repairing sewing machines they also repair vacuum cleaners. The majority of vacuum cleaner repairs are dyson

I have a Miele canister vac (going on 5 years now) and really love it. It works wonderfully, has a large bag capacity, lots of useful attachments and is super light weight. The first time DH used it, he thought it was the most amazing vacuum, so much so that it is one of his favorite chores!

Where do you buy a Miele? I've never seen them around here.

I ordered mine online from https://www.mrvacandmrssew.com/

They had the best deal I could find at the time. Had no issues ordering it. There is a local dealer where I live if I need repairs (though I haven't yet). I purchase replacement bags and filters from Amazon generally, since it is usually the best price.

This is the model that I got and really love it:

I have the Dyson animal and it's saving my sanity. I have two 75 lb Larador Retrievers. I can not properly explain to anyone who hasn't owned a lab what it is like when they blow their coat. the amount of hair is unreal. I'm using this vacuum at least once, and often twice a day on my whole upstairs and it's doing it's job. I highly recommend it.

I've never had a dyson, but I wonder -- do you think that could be because of their price? Meaning since they are more expensive, people are more inclined to get it repaired rather than throwing it out and replacing it.

No, they break down a lot according to her.

I had a bagless vac once and I hated it. Emptying the canister was so gross because the dust floated up when I dumped it in the garbage. I prefer vacuums with bags. I had a kenmore for 10 years and it worked great so I bought another and it falling apart. I am going to research that Miele brand. It looks perfect!

According to the latest Consumer reports.Miele,is the top rated. They have many models on the list.Unfortunately I can't remember the particular model of Miele that rated tops.We have one,not the top model, but it's fantastic.

How do you tell which attachments work for a Miele? We were given one and it frankly sucks on our carpets. I was looking for a carpet attachment that can handle 3 dogs and multiple foster kittens and I wasn't having any luck.

We had border collies and goldens for most of our marriage so tons of dog hair! The hair defeated three cheaper vacuums before I bought a Dyson for animals. This was years ago (I'd guess 7, maybe?) and we've never had a problem.

I do wish it had a longer power cord but am otherwise very happy with it.
