I've been using Firefox for awhile now & like it. There's a couple sites here & there that won't support it for whatever reason, so I do keep IE installed as backup, but it's been rare that I've had to use it.
Microsoft Internet Explorer is the standard. Everything supports it and many things only support it. You must have it, and will likely need to go back to it whenever your alternative browser fails you. For example, I must use IE for Amazon.com.
I do use FireFox for reading the discussion boards, because it has so many neat features and there are so many great add-ons for it.
Internet Explorer is a buggy, security devoid, non-standard piece of rubbish that doesn't even support proper text shadow - many sites will not work in it and many that will only work in it will make your computer crash. It has been discontinued for the Mac due to insurmountable competition from Apple.
The two best on the market (I believe) are Safari and Camino. They are both Mac only, although the latter is based on Firefox which is also available for Windows.
As a web designer I laugh at Internet Explorer's shrinking market share and inability to compute the web properly. Get Firefox. Get a decent browser.
It is nice to see some competition, pushing IE to improve. However, 86% market share is nothing to laugh at. IE is still the king, and will be for many years to come. There is no question that the competitors are technically better in many ways, but they simply won't be the standard as IE is, anytime soon.
We've been using Firefox for a while now and have no complaints. As others have said, we still have IE loaded for the few site problems Firefox has, but those are few and far between.
Opera, which I know you can get for PCs, and maybe for Macs, is the favorite of my husband and all of his techy friends here in the Silicon Valley. I like it very much, and there are some neat features like "mouse guestures" and things. It's a free download for the shareware version.
