I am going to color my hair myself and was wondering what is the best brand. I have some stubborn gray but my hair really absorbs color (well except the gray of course). Any advice would be great:thumbsup2

I have liked Gariner smells good & covers grey well, doesn't fade off tone. For light blonde I have a friend who swears by Perfence by L'oreal. I just saw an ad for the brunettes by Perference that I might try. I hated Feria my hair felt horrible.

I did hair for 15+ yrs and for home coloring Natural Instincts bar none is the best. I think it's by clairol. I leave it on a little longer than they advise. I always go up a shade as dark hair grabs and comes out too dark.

I like Garnier Nutrisse. The color looks nice (I use medium natural brown), and it leaves my hair feeling nice and soft.

One recommendation for stubborn gray - put the color around your temples, on your part, and wherever the gray is first. Really get a good amount on there. Brushing it on with a haircolor brush or even a toothbrush helps. Putting it on the gray first gives it a chance to sit longer while you apply the rest of the color.

Natural Instict is great! Easy to use and the color last awhile for me. I put it on and while I wait for it to do its thing I use that time to clean the bathroom. Not to mention a lot of time you can find it on sale for 2 for $5 and a coupon for $2 off of 2.

go to Sallys (you dont need a hair license to shop there) and buy a tiny bottle of gray drops (10 droplettes for each 2 ounces of hairdye) it really works to grab color onto the gray. I use ion color gel from there with 20 volume peroxide (mix ounce for ounce- color and peroxide) so much cheaper and better for your hair than the box dyes, and they do have color swatches to go by for the color hth's

I was having my hair done at the salon (just for the purpose of covering the gray) but I have "long" hair so I had to pay extra, I was looking at $80 every 6 weeks and that just wasn't in the budget. I was so scared to try hair dye at home as I had heard so many horror stories so I decided to try the Clairol Nice & Easy Foam and it was/is so easy to use! I start with all those stubborn gray hairs and then work from there (one box is more then enough for my long hair so I'm not sure why the salon was making me pay double). It runs about $9.50 at Target but I always wait for a sale and coupons then stock up (even at regular price it's a huge savings over the salon). Good luck!

I use the Garnier and L'oreal "10 minute" products that are ammonia-free. I think it is such a harsh chemical and I need to leave any type of hair color on my hair for at least 30 minutes in order for the resistant gray to get full-coverage.

This! I used to skip doing this, even though it sometimes says it on the box. I found my color lasted a whole lot longer when I let the color sit at my temples for a while first.

Store brand I like Nice and Easy and Loreal. I have been coloring my hair over 20years myself. I also go to Sally and I like Wella Color Charms colors. It is really easy to mix. You buy the die, devloper, a plastic bottle, and gloves. The developer lasts for many applications. The ratio of hair developer to dye is printed on the box along with development times. I also purchase Feria from there but it requires it's own special developer. Usually one bottle of color which is under $4.00 with Sally Card lasts two applications.

I've been coloring my hair at home for over a year now and have been using ION from Sallys. The girls that work there have been so awesome about answering questions. The color its self is around $4 and you will need the 20% developer. You use 2oz of that mixed with your color, I bought a huge bottle last time it was on sale. You will need a mixing bowl and a applicator brush but those are cheap. Oh, and gloves...cheap too.

Dh does my roots for me and it doesnt take long. Then I just apply the remainder for the last 10 minutes. I also recommend the Hairtrition brand of sulfate free shampoo and conditioner, in the green bottles. Great for color and the liters go on sale 2/14 fairly often. If you join the Sally Beauty Club for $5 you get a coupon for $5 off you next purchase and good rewards on your purchases. I usually get a 15% off your entire purchase one.

Between Sallys and the $7 hair cut place I am saving so much.

Another fan of Sally's Ion stuff here. I use the demi-permanent. I'm not very good about coloring as frequently as I should, and I find that this just sort of fades away instead of leaving really noticeable roots.

I've never heard of those gray drops and may give them a try. Can you use them with demi-permanent color?

I use Nice and Easy...have tried all the brands and it seems to do the best for my VERY stubborn grays. I do apply it to the gray areas first then leave it on 45 min. Covers all the grays! I tried the foam and had a very bad experience. It would not come of my scalp for about a week :scared1:

Another Sally's fan. The girls at Sally's can give you good advice. Bonus: once you have the Sally's card and have your basic equipment, Sally's is less expensive than the boxes.

Right now I use 1/3 Dark Neutral Brown (2N): 2/3 Medium Neutral Brown (3N). I use Clairol with a #10 developer. #20 made my hair absorb too much color and then I would leave it on my pillow case at night. #10 is more mild and works well for going lighter to darker. From what I understand #20 is what is in the OTC boxes.

For reference: I am naturally dark blond/ light brown with maybe 25-30% gray (total guess at this point haven't seen my roots for 25+ years).

Another Sally's fan here. I dye my hair dark burgundy brown, and the only box color that makes the shade I like is Feria and at $9+ a box going to Sally's is waaaay cheaper. I also feel like the color fades less with the Sally's color. I use Ion in Dark Burgundy brown.

The ladies (and sometimes men) that work at Sally's are great! They will walk you through everything. The initial investment is a bit more than a box but the developer will last several colorings, and the dye lasts me 2 colorings. I have "long" hair, its about to the middle of my back.

I had a disaster with this product! My brown hair turned black and the gray hair was brown. I was a first timer and I had my daughter help me. I guess I just don't have the skill. I'm back with my hairstylist.

I have colored my hair at home for the past fifteen years. This year I switched to the eSalon hair color and love it. I am on their subscription program and it is automatically sent to me every eight weeks. It is a bit more expensive than the otherw, but seems to cover and last just a little getter for me.

The new John Frieda foam is very easy to use. It doesn't drip at all so there's no mess. It also covers my stubborn grays. No muss, no fuss, not that expensive. :thumbsup2

Garnier of course:goodvibesI've used three different shades over 10+ years and love love love the stuff. and at only 4.99 on sale, what's not to love:thumbsup2I get alot of compliments on my color from female co-workers, so that is the true proof ::yes::

I started using John frieda foam and love it. My dh helps me with my hair and says he likes it becauses its a lot easier. He lovedit so much that t=his other coworker was complaining about having to dye his wife's hair. Dh said , "Dude you should have your wife try the foam one, its a lot easier"

LOL! These guys are manly men and they are venting about dying their wife's hair-lol! BTW his coworker also liked the foam better-lol!
