Bereavement Air Fare

In general I think it's cheaper to just search airfares as soon as you know you have an emergency need. Also search travel using both round trip and different airlines one way down, one way back.
As pointed out above "bereavement" fares are often a small amount off of full fare.

Glad it worked out and you got your flight. Bereavement fares are hard to come by these days. They originally would fly family for free. Then it went to half price. Now they're all but gone in the wake of lots of other discounts.

But it does remind me of a Seinfeld episode.

George goes to a funeral to make points with his girl friend, tries to get the half price family fare, gracefully tip toes around the death certificate thing, ends up getting in a fight with her brother, she dumps him and he doesn't get his bereavement fare.
