Beneful Dog food?

IAMS? My Chow has the canned Iams along with Nutro Natural Choice (Senior with Glucosamine)

Just wondering.......

Our dog eats Nutro Natural Choice. The breeder told us to use Beneful but our Vet said not to. The first ingredient should be a meat not corn. We had tried Iams but it gave her the runs.

We don't feed Monty any canned food at our vets suggestion.

We were feeding him dry Iams for a while but he really did not like it. He wouldn't touch it. He also won't touch Science diet. He's a very picky eater. He does not gorge his food like many dogs do. He just picks at it.

He's been on Purina One for over a year.

Try Solid Gold for your boy. And remember to change his food very gradually or he'll get sick. Dogs have a sensitive gut and changing foods should be done ever so slowly.
Here's the website: www.solidgoldhealth.com
Its a little more expensive but he's a little guy so it won't break the bank.
The canned food is also very good. Try the white fish and sweet potato. He'll love it! My Dobie is a very picky eater. She likes this food and you should see her coat!!!!

We liked Solid Gold. Also use Back to Basics. But we have a chicken and corn issue.

We're having really good luck with California Natural Rice and Lamb. My golden tends to be a little overweight so the rice is the top ingred. We also add either 1/2 can of green beans or carrots to each meal.

Not to be too graphic but you don't want to try for those small 'poops'. Those anal glands need to be emptied and the smaller waste just doesn't always get it done.

Why not IAMS?

From naturalholistic.com: http://www.naturalholistic.com/handouts/fdguide.htm

Highly advertised "Top-Shelf" lines like Science Diet, IAMS, ProPlan and ONE: These are higher quality in their ingredients, but still have artificial preservatives, and other chemical additives. There are some natural products in this category, but often are made of inferior ingredients. There are, unfortunately, a number of other low quality products that come with high-sounding names.

My rule of thumb is the more fancy commercials a pet food has, the less good it is. IAMS is owned by Procter & Gamble, which is a huge corporation driven by profit and greed, like most corporations. They do not have my animal's health as their #1 priority, I guarantee you.

I learned all of this from my holistic vet. Holistic vets have nutrition classes way above and beyond the ordinary vet. Ordinary vets have a seminar or two on nutrition usually given by representatives from IAMS or Science Diet or Eukanuba. That's why so many vets sell it straight out of their office...they have a mutually beneficial relationship with each other.

eta: Airhead, your link says it all! :)

We've been buying Beneful since it was introduced. Occasionally we replace it with Pedigree Lamb & Rice, but Whiskey, our yellow lab, really likes the Beneful. He's never had any issues with eating it and maintains his weight.

I have learned that vets are not nutrition experts when it comes to pet food. Matter of fact, many feel obligated to push specific food brands because of the kickback into veterinary schools... Science Diet being the biggest. And it's one of the worst foods on the market.

Just to say that even though your vet may be a great doctor, he's not a nutritionist, and they do have ties to companies that support their schooling and practice. So don't always take their advice as the end-all.

Your food should have NO fillers in the top 3 ingredients - esp not corn. Dogs need meat, not crap. Good foods will have 3 major sources of protein in the top 5 ingredients or so (NOT byproduct, real food)

Harley is now on Nutro Natural Choice Ultra, a new top of the line natural premium food by Nutro. He loves it, but he'll eat anything. Thank goodness he's not picky. It's affordable, he doesnt' have to eat as much, it's good for him, and his output isn't as much so it lasts longer. DH and I just went to PetsMart and read labels, based on info we got from various online sources and dog experts. I have heard AWESOME things about Chicken Soup foods too.

There is lots of info online as far as good foods and how to tell. Good luck in your search!

I feed our two Standard Poodles a raw diet also. It's called Bravo. It's a frozen raw diet. I also take my Poodles to a holistic veterinarian and they recommend a raw diet.

I agree with theSurly Mermaid if you feed Monty dog a dry or can food Wysong, Abady and Wellness are excellent with few preservatives and byproducts. I've fed my Poodles all of these at one time before switching to Bravo raw diet.

My dogs LOVE Beneful - this is definitely their favorite dry food.
However, we always alternate their dry food. By time we get close to the bottom of the bag, you can tell they are getting bored with eating the same thing everyday.

Also, they are supplimented with canned food. My older dog prefers the kinds with noodles or rice & vegetables in it. My younger dog - well I don't think she has ever tasted any of her food - she inhales it without chewing! LOL!

Both dogs are very healthy & perfect weights. There is no difference in their poops when they are eating Beneful or any other food, either.

I have already written once but will tell you some of my experiences with different foods. Our former dog was fed Groc. store food for a long time until he started having skin problems, too much soy. We switched him to Purina One, groc. store brand but his skin cleared up. As he got older, we switched him strictly to NutroMax Senior w/ glucosamine. His poops were harder & fewer in the yard ( yep, I know TMI;) ).

When we got Annabelle, the breeder had her on Pedigree & her poops were awful!!! I fed her that for a few days that gradually switched her to Wellness. She hATED it (but I had a 20# bag), we had to mix plain yogurt & Parm. cheese in it to get her to eat it. We tried Chicken Soup for Puppy Lovers Soul, Diamond, Science Diet, a few other pet store brands that I've forgotten. We found Nutro Max Puppy @ Tractor Supply very reasonably priced. She loved it. We fed her that for several monthes then I read on another website about Canidae, I tried her on that & she loves that too. Canidae can be hard to find, I kennel sells it about 15-20 miles from me. If I couldn't get to the kennel, I would give her NutroMax with no problem.

If you worry about a switch upsetting his stomach, you can mix a little yogurt in the food & I've also read canned pumpkin can help with diarrhea.
