Benefit of add-ons/small buys?

I am considering purchasing DVC for the first time. Given the amount of points it takes to stay at a resort why do people buy like 50 point contracts that would not be at their home resort?

Also given the incentives from disney to add-on directly does it make sense to buy all the points you think you will need up front or is it better to buy some and then buy an add on contract to get a better developer credit on those points?

They buy them because that's what they can afford or they just need a few more points to do what they want to.

There are many situations when DVC in general, and especially buying from the developer, don't make sense ever mathematically. Depends on what you are comparing it to, and what your exit strategy is. For these 50 point contracts, closing alone can flip the math. Of course, not all buys are because of the math.

I have bought two small add-on contracts at BRV because it's a 2042 resort and I wanted just enough points to get my week of 2BR there and no more, with the same UY. All my contracts are February UY and those can be hard to come by so I was willing to pay the small contract premium.

I think there are a few reasons why people do this:

1) They're actually buying a larger number of points, but having it split into multiple contracts. e.g. if I were buying 250 points direct I might have that broken into 5 separate 50-point contracts. Why? Because if I ever go re-sell them, those 50-point contracts will command a higher price per point on the resale market. Lots of potential buyers who can't afford a 250-point contract might jump on an extra 50 points, so the demand is higher and the prices greater.

2) Even though 50 points isn't enough to book a whole week every year, people who already own points elsewhere may use this contract every 2 or 3 years, banking and borrowing to access up to 150 points per trip. Or, they may be close enough that a 2- or 3-day getaway trip makes sense.

I actually have a 50-point contract, but it's at my home resort/in my use year. When it hit the market I just couldn't resist. Don't be like me. (No regrets, though!)

So question for you pros... I have 200 point march use year resale contract at SSR, it was a loaded contract so I actually have 400 points coming tomorrow. I've always figured I'd use those "bonus points" for a few years and then add on when they run out, I really want at least 250. But seeing as how today is Feb 28, if I add on today I'd get 2021 and 2022 March points... should I do that? Need to decide ASAP obviously, lol

You might be too late to do this because there is a process to buy direct, albeit a short one. I would check asap with a CM to see if there is a time deadline today.
You can also sign the docs today and have 10 days to cancel.

I talked to a rep already, he said I just need to let him know by like 5 pm. I just thought of this this morning and put myself in a time crunch... Good point though about being able to cancel. It just seems like if I know I'm going to want the extra points anyhow it makes sense to get them while I can get double. I could wait until next year but they'll just be more expensive by then... of course my husband just tells me to do whatever I want so he's no help lol

You don't have points coming tomorrow they are already available. With a march UY all your reservations needs to is have checkin date on or after 3/1/2022 for March 2022 UY. That means you could have made a reservation for 3/1/2022 or later a long time ago.

If serious, I wouldn’t wait until the end of the day. Also your 400 points don’t come tomorrow. They are already there and available. 200 of them will need to be used by the end of next February. Plus any 2021 points you get today and get courtesy banked fast with MS. Cutting it real close. Or just wait until next January to buy.

That's not how it works, mate.

This is going to sound snarky but I genuinely mean it, for the sake of you not setting $30,000 on fire. Please read up on DVC and become much, much more familiar with how the system works before you buy any more points.

Sure it does. 400 points 2022 (banked 2021 and 2022). Uses says 250 this year, banks 150 from 2022 into 2023, now has 350. Uses 250 again, banks 100 again, now has 300 to use 2024. Uses 250 again, banks 50, now has 250 to use 2025.

Thats how I read the "bonus" points uses over a few years.

That's not the part I'm questioning. This is: I have 200 point march use year resale contract at SSR, it was a loaded contract so I actually have 400 points coming tomorrow.

That is exactly what happened. I bought a 200 point contract that had banked points from 2021 into 2022. So yes, I am actually getting 400 points on March 1, which is my use year. I did my research :)

Exactly what I meant and what I am doing. I get 400 points tomorrow, (200 banked from 2021 plus my 200 for 2022). I have a 250 point trip booked in May, planning to bank the 150, etc exactly like you wrote out above

Most people who buy DVC say that as a way of describing things. It’s posited that way a lot here.

I think the part of getting tomorrow is what was being pointed out.

Those points become active tomorrow for trips but as you said, you already booked a May trip.

Now, if you think you needed to wait until tomorrow to book that May trip than your understanding is a little off.

It’s all about timing of the trip and can always book 11 months out from home resort and 7 months for others.

So, that May trip using 250 points could have been booked as early as last June with a March UY contract containing 400 points…and not saying you could have because it sounds like you just closed!

Uh my guide told me he could make Feb 28 work if I wanted to buy direct (also have a March UY).
But when I emailed him his out of office days he’s back on March 1, haha.
If you want to buy today to get the 2021 points, do it immediately. You still need to call MS to get them banked.

You don't "get anything" at the start of your Use Year. Your March 2022 points have been available to you for the past 11 months. Half of them have been available to you for 23 months.

Oh no not at all, I totally understand all that. I just meant tomorrow is March and that's my use year, so that is when my points actually become available for use. I've already got 250 of those points tied up in a reservation for May and was planning to most likely bank the remaining 150 into 2023. But I'd also maybe like to book a weekend trip in the fall... and we do like to do smaller trips here and there, so I feel like I'd ultimately like to have a few more points to play with.

So if I were to purchase 50 points direct TODAY, not only would I get an additional 50 points per year that align with my current March use year, but since today is still February I'd get the 2021 points and those could be banked into 2022. I already talked to a DVC rep and confirmed that all can be done, just need to decide if I want to do that NOW or wait a year or 2...

Definitely call now, get them, so you have time to get them in the account and call MS to bank.

If you have a Disney Visa, you can get 6 months for 0% interest. Plus, you do have time to back out if you need a few days to think!

Good luck!
