Thank you all for the good thoughts! :goodvibes

We did go down to the ER around 10pm to bring dinner to FIL, why he didn't eat before he left the house :confused3 Anyways.....Thankfully she went early enough that they caught it before it turned really bad. She has a history of perforated bowel issues and we were nervous. It's diverticulitis, but in the part of her bowel that doesn't get used (has a colostomy from previous problems), also a raging UTI. A round of nasty antibiotics and she should be fine :thumbsup2

I hope she improves quickly!:flower3:

We're trying for the Bluezoo dinner, defaulting to the Flying Fish dinner if we can't get Todd's - also going for a pairing at Tutto and a Tequlia pairing. That's it ... of course, with more than twenty ADRs and bofo F&W booths to stuff our faces at, that should be plenty.

Yes we have quite a few sig. dinners booked with other Dis friends!

You're skipping the French Regional lunch? I'm still debating that one. DH wants it, but I'm frustrated because it's the same region we did last year.

Since we did a regional lunch last year, as much as we enjoyed it, we decided not to do another one in the interests of trying all new events. Timing is also an issue because Guest X and Guest Y will be arriving early that afternoon and since we have dinner plans with friends that will be our only chance to see them that day.

If they had decided to hold Sweet Sundays somewhere other than Palmhenge I probably would try to book that, too.

I see.

Palmhenge

Brenda - I always put my reservation number and arrival date on my label when I ship.

/
Chelle - I am glad your MIL is on the mend.

May I just say ... this pinot grigio is damned tasty and makes scrubbing the bathrooms so much more enjoyable. :rotfl2:

I also love knowing that I have two more days off from work ... ahhhhhh, laziness ... I loves it! :thumbsup2

My Pinot Evil pinot gris is nice and crisp too. :goodvibes

You have evil wine? How intriguing ... is it pure evil or has it been diluted? ;)

This is a wonderful label and their wines are good!!! We like their red too! ::yes::

And no one is helping me drink this bottle. It is too hot to eat. Not a good combination. Must find food. Soon.

It is not particularly clever, but I started my Pre-Trip report. The link is beside my name in my signature. :goodvibes

Sorry about the commercial interruption, but here is the rest of dinner!

Entrees we tried:

Jaeger Schnitzel This was my entree of pork schnitzel served with Kartoffelbrei (German fried potatoes) and red cabbage. Can I just say YUM!! I had no idea what to expect, but this was a huge (as big as both my hands) cutlet of pork that was very tender and crispy. The wine sauce was very mild and I only saw two mushrooms amidst the onions. The fried potatoes were made with bacon and green onions and were worth every bite of the dieting downfall. I did actually try the cabbage, which would usually be a big YUCK for me....it was not too bad, a little sweet and was good in tiny bites with the schnitzel. Half of this came home with us, it was so big.

Paprika Schnitzel This was DH's entree and it was HOT and SPICY! The meat was prepared the same was mine, but was covered in a sauce that seemed to have several different kinds of peppers in it. This was hotter than jalepenos, so I don't know what they used but he loved it. One bite sent me gasping for my water! He, too, had the fried potatoes and cauliflower. It was just caulifower and was left lonely on the plate at the end. DH had no schnitzel left to contribute to the leftover box.

Heuhnerschnitzel My aunt ordered chicken schnitzel, no sauce, and pronounced it very good. None of these schnitzels were greasy at all, just nice and crunchy with the right amount of breading. She thought this was very tasty and had ordered it with the cabbage and German potato salad. I tried a bite of the potato salad and it had a definite bite of vinegar, but still a nice flavor. This is the only kind of potato salad I will even try since it is warm, and has no mayo. My mom makes it by mashing the potatoes first, so this tasted similar. I think the restaurant used a tiny bit of balsamic vinegar in theirs, which was better than plain white vinegar.

Wiener Strauss Fancy name for dd's pan fried hot dog (sans bun) served with french fries. She also tried my schnitzel and liked it without the sauce, so next time she may be a little braver in her choice.

And the ending star of the show was the Apple Strudel with vanilla ice cream and a caramel and chocolate swirl on top. Absolutely to die for. Warm, sweet apples, raisins and cranberries in homemade crust that just melted in your mouth. The four of us split one and I felt like I could split by the end of the meal. We will definitely be back! And I promise pictures if I review another meal!

(I have got to work on being less wordy and more entertaining, if I'm going to do a trip report!)

Review of Freiberg Restaurant

So yesterday we decided to broaden our dining experiences here in East TN, and try something new. This little restaurant has been open for a few months and seemed intriguing, we just hadn't made the commitment to go yet. It is in one of the older buildings downtown from the early part of the 20th century and is quite tiny. Seats about 50 patrons, counting the upstairs and still has the exposed brick walls, tall windows, and dark wooden tables and chairs. I loved the atmosphere and we were even treated to a really good band playing upstairs (not German music in the least, though. A little Van Morrison, lite Guns N Roses, Pink Floyd, Beatles, etc. went quite well with schnitzel. Who knew?)

Tonight it was me, DH, DD and my mom's youngest sister, Aunt P. My aunt's MIL was German, so I thought she might enjoy trying this place with us. There are no pictures, mainly because the place was so little, and the table so little, I would have had to scoot my (tall) stool away from the table just to get the whole plate in the shot.

Anyway, on the the good stuff!

To drink, dd and I had water, my aunt ordered sweet tea and DH tried the house draft Klein. This was described by our waitress as a light pilsner. It was a little heavier in color, more of a golden than pale yellow and had a very nice smooth flavor, but a bit of bitterness in the middle. It then finished smoothly. Different enough for dh to enjoy (and me to sneak a few sips!), but too different for him to order a second. For that he chose a Bud Light draft .

We started out with Kartoffelhaut aus Sachsen for an appetizer. This was described as large potato skins filled with cream cheese spinach dip, smothered in Swiss cheese and baked to a golden brown". Are you drooling yet? We were when we tasted this wonderful creation! I never thought of adding cream cheese to stuffed potatoes
but it blended so well with the Parmesan in the spinach dip. Definitely cheese overload, so it was good that there was only one each for us.

With this we were served a basket of soft homemade bread with butter and onion butter, which I had never seen. It was full of tiny green onions, chopped finely and not to be confused with chives. This was definitely very onion-y and I left it for DH, who gobbled it up.

(Regretfully, at this time I must leave you salivating for more because we are going to MIL's for lunch and I am being summoned to the car. I thought I could get this finished, but it will have to wait till this evening. Sorry, Friendies! :flower3:)

Jamie, how could you leave us hanging like this!!! I love German food, and the closest German restaurant is an 1 hour away and in Chapel Hill, so it's always packed with obnoxious college kids! I need to live vicariously through you....

We still have half a bottle of that wine from last night in the refrigerator ... Jay said he'll just use it for marinades. To make up for the general cussedness of that wine I just placed a bottle of Santa Margarita Pinot Grigio in the fridge for us to enjoy later this evening when Jay is finished working. I know we'll like this one! :thumbsup2

Wow, Brenda, you and I do have similar tastes in wine....I just had the Santa Margarita Pinot Grigio last weekend.....and it was quite tasty!

Thank you all for the good thoughts! :goodvibes
