Review of Freiberg Restaurant
So yesterday we decided to broaden our dining experiences here in East TN, and try something new. This little restaurant has been open for a few months and seemed intriguing, we just hadn't made the commitment to go yet. It is in one of the older buildings downtown from the early part of the 20th century and is quite tiny. Seats about 50 patrons, counting the upstairs and still has the exposed brick walls, tall windows, and dark wooden tables and chairs. I loved the atmosphere and we were even treated to a really good band playing upstairs (not German music in the least, though. A little Van Morrison, lite Guns N Roses, Pink Floyd, Beatles, etc. went quite well with schnitzel. Who knew?

Tonight it was me, DH, DD and my mom's youngest sister, Aunt P. My aunt's MIL was German, so I thought she might enjoy trying this place with us. There are no pictures, mainly because the place was so little, and the table so little, I would have had to scoot my (tall) stool away from the table just to get the whole plate in the shot.
Anyway, on the the good stuff!
To drink, dd and I had water, my aunt ordered sweet tea and DH tried the house draft
Klein. This was described by our waitress as a light pilsner. It was a little heavier in color, more of a golden than pale yellow and had a very nice smooth flavor, but a bit of bitterness in the middle. It then finished smoothly. Different enough for dh to enjoy (and me to sneak a few sips!), but too different for him to order a second. For that he chose a Bud Light draft

.
We started out with
Kartoffelhaut aus Sachsen for an appetizer. This was described as large potato skins filled with cream cheese spinach dip, smothered in Swiss cheese and baked to a golden brown". Are you drooling yet? We were when we tasted this wonderful creation! I never thought of adding cream cheese to stuffed potatoes
but it blended so well with the Parmesan in the spinach dip. Definitely cheese overload, so it was good that there was only one each for us.
With this we were served a basket of soft homemade bread with butter and onion butter, which I had never seen. It was full of tiny green onions, chopped finely and not to be confused with chives. This was definitely very onion-y and I left it for DH, who gobbled it up.

Regretfully, at this time I must leave you salivating for more because we are going to MIL's for lunch and I am being summoned to the car. I thought I could get this finished, but it will have to wait till this evening. Sorry, Friendies!
