Those of you with Belk accounts beware. Belk's policy is to assess a late fee online BEFORE you payment is due so that if you are paying online, when you log in, your balance may include a late payment, even though your payment isn't past due yet.

For example, my bill was due today in the amount of $56.77. I logged onto pay and it said my balance was $85.77. I knew I hadn't bought anything so I looked into it, and noticed that they had assessed a $29 late fee.

Customer service said that was the way the system is set up, to assess the late charge on the day the payment is due. I think it is a great way for Belk to get more money from people.

There should be somewhere in fine print that the payment must be received by a certain time on the due date, before a late fee can be applied. Many state that payment must be received before the close of business day which means 5 PM in most cases. If this isn't stated somewhere then you can fight the late fee. If you can go pay at the store. Payments made at the store on the day it is due, will not incur a late fee.

That stinks. But could it be that they don't process payments on weekends, so if you didn't pay by yesterday (Fri) the payment wouldn't be processed until Monday, and therefore late.

Still, It stinks.
