Being Kind at Disney

Seeing the post of the 20-year-old autistic boy who ran out of HM because of someone else’s narcissist behavior (screaming in the stretch room) made me think of the idea for this thread…

what is one thing you would want to tell others to think about and to avoid doing in the parks because it bothers you or others or is inconsiderate?

here’s mine: sometimes I only get to ride GOTG, RSR, SM, or other rides that have a picture taken once in a great while. So I really look forward to seeing the picture with my son and getting it on Maxpass or paying for it. I really hate when the people in front of us are so inconsiderate and they put their arms up in front of our faces. I realize that you want to have fun too, but try to consider that others might like their picture as well.

Sorry to be a Debbie downer, but my hope is that others that are oblivious but guilty of some of these things will stop and think about it next time. One can hope.

Controversial, maybe, but, especially when my daughter was little, I am/was bugged by people who put their kids on their shoulders for shows and parades, because those of us (who might be short) behind them already have a hard time seeing. We definitely cannot see over you AND an extra two feet of kid on top. I know that *your* kid wants a better chance to see, but what about all the kids behind you?

This is mine, 100%. I am notorious for reminding my family to pull over while they look for fast passes, consult the map, check wait times, etc.

I hate it when people recite the recordings in attractions like The Haunted Mansion (e.g.) while the actual recording is playing. We get it, you’re here all the time, you’ve memorized it. We haven’t and we want to experience the ride. Shut up.

Controversial, maybe, but, especially when my daughter was little, I am/was bugged by people who put their kids on their shoulders for shows and parades, because those of us (who might be short) behind them already have a hard time seeing. At Tokyo Disneyland all the guests sit down for parades and other shows. It’s so much better, and something I wish would catch on in the US.

Tokyo Disneyland is so different. Park capacity is huge on a daily basis and yet the crowd management and in general, how the crowd behaves, makes it that much more enjoyable to watch shows/ meet characters etc.... A lot would need to change to have that in the US. I mean, you won't see people in the US pick up trash all around them after a sporting event is over. Culture is way different.

An annoying thing for me is when One person stands in line and holds it for like 10 people to come in later. A few is fine with me, but when you see like 3 sets of families cutting into the line to get to this one person that is in line ahead of them... that to me is a bit too much.

One of my biggest peeves at DL is when people walk ALLLLL the way through the line/queue to “meet up with their friends.” It’s almost always teenagers/very young adults. Sometimes they’ll say ”excuse me,” and sometimes they’ll just shove their way past, but it is just super annoying to me to have to stand in a long line, only to have it lengthened in front of you yet again. I get it if it’s a parent taking a kid to the bathroom or something, but otherwise, come on! I hope I don’t sound too petty, but to me it’s considered cutting in line, which I HATE!
Also, YES! The whole stopping in the middle of a walkway (be it there OR Costco) drives me CRAZY! And then they look at you like you did something wrong if you run into them…

I forgot my other pet peeve. People who take photos on dark rides with their flash on. Ugh. Just stop, put down the phone/camera, and enjoy the ride, or at least turn off the flash. Your photo will look better too.

Not a pet peeve but rather a story to share. Back in May, DH and I went to Disney Springs for a late night dinner. The only things open were the food trucks. We ordered and while I was waiting for the food he went to get a table. All that was left was a table with no chairs as people had moved things around to accommodate their parties throughout the night. I remember bringing our food over, being so exhausted and thought well I’ll guess we’ll stand and eat. A nice man nearby saw us and brought over a chair for me. His party left shortly after and brought one more for my husband. It was such a small gesture but I appreciated it so very much! Kindness, even in a simple form, goes a long way

OMG, virtual hug. I used to live in London and the slow walking tourists when I had to be somewhere did my head in. Sometimes I worked near Oxford Street and oh my goodness trying to get to work was a nightmare!

This is the one that bothers me the most, because it's not just a momentary annoyance, but can actually ruin the entire experience of viewing something special. Example is in the old Aladdin show at DL, a girl in front of me held up her tablet to record the whole show. It was really hard to look past that lit device to watch the show.

People getting to the front of the line at guest services and monopolising the cast members time with dozens of questions rather than just sorting out whatever issue they have and moving on. I remember been in a line at Town Hall with 7 or 8 groups in front of me to get my wife’s tickets reissued and it took an hour with 3 cast members on the counter. People asking where the closest toilets to each ride were, what was the closest/best dining option in each land, how much did things cost, why were the lines so long (hello!) and oh by the way, I came to upgrade my tickets. We were in and out in 2-3 mins.
So frustrating and happens everywhere in the USA.

I'd be happy to just import ALL guests from Tokyo Disneyland! I've never been in such a polite, well-mannered crowd of people. It was wonderful there.

I totally agree about the "Sudden Stoppers"!

Everyone is walking at the same pace of traffic when all of a sudden there is a sudden stop that effects everyone.

Whether this is at Disney, Costco or Driving your car, it is annoying and possibly dangerous to the sudden stopper. I was just at Costco a few weeks ago, going with the flow of the crowd. When all of a sudden the person directly ahead of me stopped and I accidentally hit my shopping cart to the back of her feet.

I apologized and nicely told her if she needs to stop, to gradually pull over to the side and stopping in the middle might be dangerous. She just looked at me like I was crazy. LOL

We call them "round abouts". They are very common during the week between Christmas and NY, as we call it Newbie week, since so many are people who got tickets for Christmas and haven't been before or only go every few years, and don't know their way around. We just chalk it up to learning their way around. Although our group keeps threatening to do it with an Animal Kingdom map....

Welp, reading this thread, I'm realizing that it's not just me. When I saw the OP, my thought was "how much time have you got". Next thought was "You're such an old grump to have so much to complain about!" But then, reading through the first 16 posts..... well, you guys covered almost all of my pet peeves!! I'm feeling like I'm normal and not just a grumpy nit-picker!

My worst flash-on-dark-rides story was scoring the front of the boat in POC only to have a guy in the back row of the boat in front of us, facing backward and taking one flash pic after the other. (Anyone here who's seen the classic movie Rear Window?- ya, like that)
Worst kid on shoulder story- Placed my elderly, handicapped mother's wheelchair in a spot for Wishes over an hour before start time so she'd have a good view. Just as it began, tall Dad with kid on shoulder (making him the equivalent of an 8' tall human) came and stood right in front of her. Ya... I tapped his shoulder and pointed to my mom and asked him to move. He did.

A few I can add:
Theater attractions where one person in a group of foreign speaking persons is loudly translating every bit of dialogue for the whole group to hear.
Groups of young persons using Epcot Festivals as an outdoor bar scene. I'm not talking about just feeling good and laughing.... I mean the falling into other guests, practically knocking them over (yes happened to me- the whole group just laughed) and vomiting in the walking paths (yes happened right next to me) ....DRUNK! I will never again visit Epcot Fri-Sun!!

It's tough being a person who is uber conscious of being courteous toward those around me (how I was raised- it's my default) and expecting the same from others. Disappointment is inevitable. I try not to let it get under my skin but it helps now knowing there are others out there like me!

I want to preface this by saying "I'm old". That said, I have actually seen more drunk "non-young" people at both DCA and Epcot than younger people. I hate seeing anyone who is getting so drunk they are causing issues. It happens too often. With Disney prices, you wouldn't think it would happen, but it does.
