Being a SAHM/D with "help" from the government?

Is it ok to be a SAHParent if you need government assistance to do it?

  • Sure, Stay home is expensive. Take all the help you can get.

  • No, it's up to you to raise your family.

Here's something that perplexes me. Why do some people look at daycare as having someone else raise your child but look at school as a place to get an education:confused3 ?

Personally I don't think people should even entertain the idea of having a child unless they can fully and completely support that child all on their own.

Oh, and I'm one of those horrible mothers who works (all of 21 hours a week) because I WANT TO:scared1: :scared1: :rotfl2: !! I like challenging my mind and being with grownups. It also makes me treasure the time with my DD even more. It's also nice to be able to stock $$ away or college, retirement etc.

I really agree with this.
I've never understood that either. I guess 5 is the magic age. :confused3
It's like Mothers Day out/ My SiL was a saint because she wanted her DD to get "socialization" in a 3 day MDO program but I was horrible because I worked and my kids were in daycare 40 hours. I have always been tempted to ask what is the "magical" number of hours to be away from your child before you are a bad parent. :lmao:

What the heck! Are you saying fibromyalgia is a made up disease? Well let me tell you something Ducklite, as somebody who suffers everyday from this condition I don't wish it on my worst enemy and to even suggest that somebody can make it up just to milk the system has got to be one of the most ignorant and demeaning things I have read on these boards.
I am sitting here in amazement that I just read that. All I can say is watch out baby cause Karma is a *****!

I did not read into that what you did. I think she was just making the point that the person would come up w/ something to not have to work and something w/ no "yes/no" test would do it. I think you are being too sensitive.

I understand why it was created. I just want people to understand that there are plenty of people that don't get it even though by virtue of where they live they'd be considered middle class. Income caps don't work at a federal level. They need to be more regionalized.

Sorry, I should have clarified. On the "why it was created" explanation, I was responded to momof2inPA.

I hope she wasn't saying that. I didn't take it that way anyway. In some cases, fibromyalgia can be one of those "hidden" illnesses. It's also very difficult to diagnose or "prove" by looking at the person. It could be one of those diseases that a person could convince a not-so-honest doctor to diagnose them with because there are no real, definitive tests like they have for lupus, diabetes, etc--you know, where the results are in black and white from a lab. I know that I don't believe it is made up, but I can see how someone could "scam" using that type of illness.

It angers me. My cousins do this and they have no reason to need help from the government. One of my cousins is a farmer, sure he doesn't make a whole lot, but he does well. His wife has a MASTERS DEGREE in animal science and was offered a very prestigous position with a cattle company. She decided she would rather just be a SAHM and they are partially living off of welfare. They just had their first baby in the spring paid for by welfare and are now looking to move to Florida. They see nothing wrong with this way of life. My other cousin and her husband are the same way. He moves from job to job because he keeps finding things wrong with what he is doing and excuses to quit while she sits at home with a college degree watching tv all day. They also just had a baby mainly on welfare and her parents still pay their rent and her car payment. She is proud of the fact that the goverment is paying her to be a SAHM.

Personally, I think they are taking advantage of the situation and it should not be allowed, but this is my opinion.

Did I say that? I am fully aware that many people suffer from this disease. I also know that it is one of the diseases (along with CFS) that is often "used" by people to milk the system. I personally know someone who has been trying to collect SSDI using that as a scheme, it's odd that she was able to go from perfectly healthy to terribly disabled in the matter of a couple months after she met someone who told her "how easy" it would be to live off the monthly check.

I NEVER implied that everyone who has Fibromyalgia is playing the system. Maybe you and your attitude are what need to watch the karma. Sheesh.

Exactly. You get an A+ in reading comprehension. Others need to retake the class. ;)

4s, I went back and read that post and the few before it. I honestly don't think she meant it is a made up disease. I think she's saying that some welfare scammer was going to try to fake a debilitating illness to continue to collect a monthly check. I don't really know anything about fibromyalgia but I know some autoimmune diseases are very tough to diagnose so perhaps someone who was trying to cheat the system could pretend they have symptoms that would lead drs on a wild goose chase and finally just deem her disabled.

Hope you're doing well:hug: .

Your posts on this thread are great and I agree with everyting you have said.
