I've been wanting to learn how to play tennis with my husband for something fun to do for exercise & fresh air but I'm shocked at how expensive many of the rackets are! I don't want to spend $50+ per racket if I can get something decent for less money, especially aince i just want to hit the ball around for fun. Any suggestions?

Goodwill or garage sales!

Hah! I never even thought of that! I think I will check Craigslist also. Thank you so much!

...I'd still love to hear anyone's suggestions in case we have to purchase new, though. :)

When I needed one for my son to take lessons for a week each summer, I just went to Target. I think I paid less than $25, and it has worked out fine. I bought it a few years ago, and he's still using it.

I agree about Walmart and Target having cheap ones. Amazon also sells used on their site. Do you have any second hand shops in your area?

My son plays tennis for the High School team and his run over $200 for what they need. Ouch.

But that racket is worth $200, so it's not money wasted. You'll be able to get that re-strung and re-gripped a lot. Some of the cheap rackets are not worth re-stringing.

To the OP: A beginner can use just about any racket that doesn't have broken strings, but you should be careful about the size of the grip. Smaller hands need a smaller grip and vice-versa. If the grip is wrong, the racket will turn in your hand and your hand and arm will hurt. You can find inexpensive rackets at Walmart, Target, etc. When you get better and decide you're in it for the long haul, most reputable racket dealers will let you borrow a couple of rackets at a time to see what works best for you.

Tennis is a great, long term sport. Enjoy!
