Hello! Been awhile since I posted, but knew you guys would have some answers for me!::yes::

For Mother's Day, my DH's family has decided to celebrate with a banana split party. Fun for everyone except me- the lactose intolerant one! But, I would like to participate (i.e. EAT!!) so I looked at the non-dairy frozen goodies at the grocery store today.

Not much choice....one brand was made from organic rice milk (chocolate or butter pecan) @ $4.59/pint!! Ouch!! That's more than Ben & Jerry's!!!:scared1: Has anyone tried this? Is it decent- does it kinda taste like real ice cream?
The only other experience I have had was with Lactaid brand ice cream. It was awful. I drink Lactaid milk, but I thought the ice cream was gross. I have never tried rice milk or soy milk products.
If there are any brands to recommend, I'd appreciate it! I plan to go to Kroger later this week- they seem to have more variety for alternate diets. Thanks a bundle!:lovestruc

If its the So Delicious brand go for it its delicious the mint chocolate(chip or ripple) is my favorite, my daughter is lacose intolarant and i buy it for her, i always steal a few bites its really good

For the most part the rice ice creams are tolerable if you imagine they are the last dessert on the planet. Rice milk is much more watery than cream, so they are more like lightly flavored opaque ice, and nearly as hard to scoop. We have to take it out of the freezer for a while before even trying to get them out.
I'm exaggerating a bit, but not worth it unless there really is no other option. In which case, the only one we've really liked has been the cookie dough.

How about just taking a lactaid pill and then eating whatever flavor/brand you like?

The So Delicious line of coconut ice cream is definitely the best of the alternative ice creams.

Give this a test drive before you spend a lot of $$...slice some very ripe bananas and freeze. Once they are frozen solid, grab your blender and a spatula. Blend the banana...nothing else, just the banana. Scrape down the sides occasionally. The banana will become sort of gravely texture at first but keep at it. Blend and keep scraping down the sides and eventually, the banana will magically become very smooth and creamy just like ice cream. Even after re-freezing it keeps it's texture. (or at least my batches have, I don't keep them for longer than a day though!) It is shockingly delicious and the texture really is like ice cream! There will be a faint banana taste but not nearly as strong as a regular banana. I like to throw in some frozen strawberries with mine while I blend...

Just what I was going to say. I buy the Target or Walmart ones about half the price of the name brand and work just as well. If you have tried taking one and it did not work try taking two.

How about thinking a little further outside the box and serving yourself a piece of poundcake (or even a shortcake) to put all the yummy ice cream toppings and fruits on top of?

Another vote for just taking the over the counter pill. You take it just as you start to eat your first bite. Then you can eat what ever you want with the rest of the group.

I always keep a pill in my purse, you never know when you might need one, especially at Disney!

If you don't want to take the lactaid for whatever reason - I'd just get sorbet.

Sorbets are delicious, creamy, ice cream-like. Much more than Rice Dream or whatever. Haagen Daz makes a great chocolate sorbet, coconut ones are always super creamy, lemon is nice and light, etc. There are tons of flavours and I'm sure other people will appreciate a somewhat lighter option.

I eat sorbet. I love Ciao Bella! It's not fake ice cream and it's not cheap but it's marvelous. I've also done the banana blend thing and it's pretty good although a bit sticky. I switched to sorbet a few years ago. Some rasberry sorbet tastes great with a little chocolate sauce. I don't normally top it though.

two of these before you eat dairy and you are good to go. They work quite well for me and i actually eat a lot of dairy now. Make sure you also take calcium with vitamin D. The D is necessary to help put the calcium back into your bones.

Just be careful...some sorbets have a dairy component in them and can still cause a problem.

I'm also lactose intolerant and i just take lactaid. Works very well and can enjoy whatever dairy i choose to eat.

I just looked at the lactaid pills in the previous poster with the link and they don't have as much lactase enzyme as the walmart brand I get which is 9000 FCC units. I still take 2, but they work for me.

I second this.

Not a fan of the soy. The rice is so so. The coconut it very good, every flavor I've tried.

Here's a third vote for coconut ice cream. I can't have rice, soy, or almond due to other allergies. The Mint Chocolate tastes almost identical to the regular kind.

Ew...that's what I was afraid of. I'd rather do without! Thanks for saving me some $$$$!:thumbsup2

I have tried that in the past without much success. Maybe I didn't take enough- I will have to try these again.

Mmmmm...sounds yummy! ::yes::Now I just have to find some!

Thanks everyone! I knew you'd have some answers!!

I found my daughter needed 4 of the fast-acting Lactaid when she was at the peak of her intolerance! Her doctor said I could go even higher than that if needed - they are pretty safe.
