Before Cell Phones

Did anybody have their own phone line as a teen? My parents got me one when I was about 15 because they were tired of me tying up the main line. And of course I chose a princess phone.

But it was plain beige with a rotary dial. They were too cheap to let me get another color and touch tone buttons. Oh the humanity!!!

My dad had his own phone line cause he worked from home, so he got his four daughters a phone line and we shared it.

That was cutting edge in the 70's. I didn't know anyone with two phone numbers back then. It didn't help though. Our phone line was busy all the time, so we gave our friends our dad's work number to reach us. :rotfl:

Sure did! Neon blue cordless phone baby, complete with my own answering machine ;)

I had a beige touch tone princess phone. My mom did lots of volunteer work and always on the phone. My dad was the one to get me my princess phone when I was 13. I loved it and still remember my phone #.

I asked for one all through the end of elementary school into middle school. Then I got to middle school and my friends started to get cell phones because their older siblings had them, so I moved my wishes onto a cell phone. Got my first cell when I entered high school (9th grade).

Aw yeah. My parents got me one in middle school (same time we got dial up), so "my" phone was the back up for when anyone was online.

We used to have 2-3 lines. 1 was a main phone, the second line was my dad's office and the 3rd was a fax line. We used to use the fax line for our dial up internet (AOL). I didn't have my own phone when i was young and the first time i had a cell phone was in college while other people my age got their's in high school. my parents didn't believe in cell phones. LOL.

I had my own line BUT I paid the bill every month.

It came in handy during high school..the school had my number on record so I got all the skipped class phone calls LMAO

I have a trim line that I still use. I love the old phones. Never had a phone in my room

No, and actually when I was a kid we had exactly one phone in the house. Dad did insist on a private line (a lot of our relatives & a few friemds had party lines).

Not only did I NOT have my own phone line, I didn't even have an extension in my room and the cord on the kitchen phone was too short to even reach into the pantry. No privacy, no dignity; I was practically raised by wolves. :sad2:

That was exactly my problem too! My dad would not allow me to have a phone in my room at all. All the phones were in public rooms. My dad did it because he wanted to eavesdrop on my conversations to make sure I wasn't talking about anything inappropriate with my friends. Do you know how hard it is to talk to a boy or talk to your friends about a boy when your dad is sitting there listening to every word you say? :faint:

Oh, my family's phone was even older than that! Ours had the metal dial face

Lol, that looks familiar! Come to think of it, I bet ours was metal too! Sure was built to last, not like our cordless phones that we have to replace every couple of years.

My mother wouldn't let me have one. I always tied up the only phone though which drove her crazy. It served her right. ;)
