A mom of a boy in my DDs school class is looking for someone to take care of her son and daughter (2nd and 1st grade) before and after school this month while she covers a maternity leave at her doctor's office. She's asked if I would be interested. As it's only a month, I can probably handle it but I have no idea what to charge her. I know all markets are different, but how much do you pay/charge for this kind of care? Per week? Per day? for each child. She needs me to start watching them on Monday, and I haven't a clue as to what I should ask for. Thanks in advance!

Well not sure how it equates from here to there (i'm in Virginia).. but we pay $65 a week to the local YMCA for after school care for DD9. The good thing they have pretty good structured activities until we pick her up.. and a homework clinic as well. So by the time we pick her up, she's done her homework and worked off some of the kid energy from being in class all day! :)

Hope this helps

Just did the math based on how long she's in aftercare.. works out to just under $4 per hour.. spends about 2.5-3.5 hours a day there.

new york here just outside the city, my neighbor does it in her house and charges $10 per hour for 2 kids (brother /sister) she does homework and provides snacks. she discounts her rate if more than 4 hours. hope that helps

I'm in WI and I pay 3.25 an hour per kid, so $6.50 and hour for both. I'd say that is on the cheap end for sure! We were really lucky to get spots for our two kids at such a great price for great care!

Not a clue on how much to charge but...have you thought of some of these things?

1. What if your daughter (or if you have other kids, one of them) wants to do some type of after school activity when the other kids are there? Will you be able to drive your child to to/from the activity with the day care kids there (is your car big enough, is this other mom ok with that, etc.)?
If not, are you willing to sacrifice your kids after school activities for this?

2. Are you also the back up care in case school is cancelled for an emergency (might be a little early for snow...but flood, fire, etc. could happen that might cause the school to close down for a day or more)
Is that something you think you can do?

Just a few things I have thought of in the past when thinking about providing after school care... :)

Good luck to you! :)

Here in Ohio, a state licensed daycare/preschool that we use charges $30 per week for either before or after school care, $60 a week if you need both for one child. They are open 6am-6pm, bus picks up in the morning around 7am and drops off around 3:15pm.

We have a before/after school program at the school. Drop off at 7am is $5 a day. I guess it is an hour then at 8 they go to breakfast - school starts at 8:15. Afterschool is $15 for 3 hours a day which includes snack time, homework time and two clubs a day (though if kids need more homework time they can have it).

Thanks for your answers. Gives me a better idea of what I'm looking at. Looked into the school systems Ycare program website and found that it's $75 for the week per child. That's more than I will charge as it's licensed, etc but it's a starting point.

I've already let her know that DD swims on Tues & Thurs and if the children aren't picked up before it's time to leave, they'll be coming with us and will need to be picked up at the pool. We have a Suburban so vehicle space isn't an issue.

This is one thing we haven't yet worked out. The kids are out of school three days for parent/teacher conferences. She's looking to see if her husband will be able to work at home for those days. Other days like you mentioned, we'll need to discuss tomorrow!.

I've thought of doing this in the past myself and decided not to take it on. Probably wouldn't here either but as it's just for a month, I can try it out and see how it goes. Thanks for bringing up these points!

I pay $10/hour to have someone come to my home and watch two children. In my state, if you are paid to watch children in your home, you have to be licensed.

I charge $10 per day per child for before and after school care....I provide homework help and snacks and drinks.

I watch 2 friend's children (total of 3 boys)
2 are before/after at $55 per week each
1 is before only at $30 per week
We took what the YMCA charges, cut it in half and rounded to the nearest number.

I pay $80 per week at a chain called Discovery Point. They pick up and drop off my daughter at her school.

We pay $305/month for before & after at our school's program (at the school, but run by a private company), so close to that $75/week you mentioned.

I am a licensed daycare provider. I live in MN. Small town. I charge 5 dollars for before school and 5 dollars for after school. I am open from 6 -5:30. I provide snacks and drinks. Believe me it is worth much more than I receive, but these kids have been with me since infancy. School kids can be a lot of work and trouble. They just love to get the little ones going. I think after this school year, I am going to quit doing school age child care. Just not worth it.
