I've searched and can't see an answer to my question. The price of the beer mug, does this include a beer or just the mug? Just wondering if you get your first beer with it or not basically. Its to try and work out whether its worth getting one or not as I don't drink a lot of beer and I'm trying to work out whether to bother or just buy the beer separately - and yes I am a bargain queen but hate to think I've wasted money :D I think the answer is no but I want to be sure before I do the maths

No, it’s just the mug which allows you purchase a larger amount of beer for a lesser price when it’s filled. so, No there is no ”first beer” included. It does save money as your getting more than what you’d purchase on it’s own. Worth it.

Thanks :D This is what I thought but as said want to run the math of whether I'm likely to get moneys worth as tend to only have a couple of beers on a cruise so need to work it out.

The mug alone is worth the $$ even if you don't drink. You can also use it on future cruises.

Keep in mind, you can carry on beer as well. Even if flying in, you can grab beer. We stayed overnight after flying into Miami and walked to a store from a hotel and carried beer on. And he used the mug. Reminder, if you don’t want to carry the mug, grab the card when your done. You can then give them the card and get a clean glass w/beer your purchasing.

There is a thread on here somewhere (search beer mug) that breaks down the cost per ounce and how much beer you have to drink for it to be a deal. The mug has gotten smaller over the years, so the value is diminishing. If you like beer, it's a good deal. If you aren't sure, well if you like souvenirs this is still a good deal.

Ha ha thanks. so I had a mug on previous cruise and it was smashed on the way home so this is what was putting me off getting just for the mug to be honest.

Yeah so this is basically what I did :D I couldn't find the thread when I looked although I couldn't believe no one would have done it.

I wonder how long they keep old threads. There definitely was a long thread a few years back. Basic gist is that the mugs are about 21 oz currently, I believe. They used to be upwards of 23 or 24 oz. If you have one of those mugs, they are quite valuable. But, if you get a 21 oz mug, then you buy a beer for about $9. That depends on the beer, of course. So, that comes out to like to like $.56 per ounce. So, the beer in a 21 oz mug would normally cost about 11.80, but instead is only $9. So, you get nearly $3 in "free" beer with the mug. The mug cost $15 (or used to) so if you drink 6 beers, you come out ahead. On a 7 day cruise, 1 beer per day puts you ahead. Those are rough numbers, but you see where I'm going. Now, most people leave the mug when the cruise is over and take the token (card). Then bring it back next time and you get the same deal. So it adds up depending on how many cruises.

Now, I'll tell you don't buy it planning to use it after the first cruise. Some people report they won't let you use the mug unless you have one charged on that cruise. But, I've never had that happen. I've probably used my mug on 10+ cruises. Depending on how much beer you drink, then it maybe worth a mug every cruise.

We have taken our mug on 17 cruises and never had a problem. It's a nice mug so we eventually bought a second one to keep at home. Now we just get the token at the end of the cruise and take that home with us. It's a lot easier to transport than the mug!

I’m at 19 cruises and (I hope counting, but we’ll have to see). I usually just keep the mug card, but I have two glass and one plastic (from the pool deck). One was a gift from our DD. So I’ve purchased three mugs myself, kept one of each style and have a mug token for future use.

Thanks! This is what I roughly worked it to! This is a 10 dayer so maybe I will venture and try buying another one!

Also this has sparked further questions:

  1. Are they still glass? Is it just the pool deck that gives out plastic ones?
  2. Can you use for any of the on tap drinks i.e. I think that O'Gills does strongbow so I could use it for that?

Yes, clear glass with DCL logo except for blue plastic with logo on pool deck.

I have done that, but it could be bartender dependent. The cider comes out of the same set of taps, so it seems reasonable to me.

I believe it is for any draft beer. The main drawback is not every bar has every beer and some have very limited selection. So if you find one you want, either hit that up before you head to your destination (show, dinner, etc) or see if you can convince a server to travel for you. The last time on the Dream I had a heck of time getting a decent beer. They seemed out of everything.
