I just ordered this for my husband for our upcoming cruise. We have never thought to do it before. Is it much of a cost saver? I paid $15.25 for the mug and then I know he can use the mug or a token to get a larger beer for the price of a smaller beer each time. What is the cost of the beer? I'm just curious if buying the package makes much of a difference.

It’s a fair deal. Scroll to the beverage section here https://www.mousesavers.com/disney-cruise-tips/disney-cruise-line-onboard-tips-and-tricks/

It's good value if you're a drinker (both myself and DH are big beer drinkers), but also it's a great souvenir if you bring the mug home, so i think it more than pays itself off.

DH got the beer token when we went to the Caribbean last year on the Fantasy. Can he use it on the Wonder? Or it only works on the same ship?

General consensus from multiple threads seems to be, Disney intended the package to be for one trip, but seems to honor the deal on multiple cruises without re-purchasing the mug.

You receive "roughly" 5 oz more beer in the beer mug versus the normal. Beer process range from $6.50-$10. If you plan on getting around 6 beers or so total throughout your cruise you break even but then you get to keep the mug as well. You can also bring your mug or token back on future cruises. We have used ours the past 5-6 cruises with no issues at all so we have more than got our moneys worth.

Like they said, you get that extra 5 oz and 6 beers is about the right number. Another point is they won't sell you the larger beer unless you have the mug or chip. There's no price listed for the larger size. You either get the smaller size for the $6 - $10 or you get the larger size for that same price with the mug.

The chips (really it's a credit card sized paper card) are the same across all 4 ships. It wouldn't surprise me if this changes in the future, especially with the new ships coming on board, but for right now, the chip works across multiple cruises and multiple ships.

I've used the same token on all 4 ships, maybe 10 cruises. I've heard people had a hard time using it on a cruise where they didn't purchase the mug, but that hasn't happened to me yet. The deal isn't as good as it used to be since the mug gets smaller. If you bought several years ago, I believe the mugs were 24 oz. You could bring the older, bigger mugs, but most people just use the token. My guess is that by the new ships come online they mugs will be 18 oz and the deal would barely be worth it for a $15 mug.

IMHO, this is not something to view as a "cost saver" in any fashion.

First, you get a reasonably nice GLASS souvenir beer mug to take home. The $15 is probably what you would pay just to buy the glass no matter what.

Second, you don't have to tote the thing around with you or clean it - when you're done, you ask for a "token" (it's a card, really) and stick that in your wallet or lanyard. When you want to have a beer, you pull out the token and hand it to the server with your order - your beer will come in a clean, chilled glass.

Third, you will pay the regular price for a draft beer (about $6-$7 if I remember correctly), but you will receive 21 oz instead of 16 oz. In order to completely pay for the cost of the beer mug, you would need to get approximately 2 - 2.5 "free beers" worth of beer. That's somewhere between about 32 and 40 oz which would translate to between about 6 and 8 beers in total.

I like the mug, I loved always having a chilled glass, and it was great to never have to tote the thing around with me. That's all worth the price of admission in its own right. The fact that I got a few extra ounces with each pour was a bonus.

Exactly how does "using the token" benefit you from one cruise to the next except that you don't have to buy the mug over and over? Or, is that basically what you're saying? You bought the mug, didn't exchange the token for it at the end of the cruise, and you just keep re-using the token?

I believe that is what they are trying to say. We have used our 2 beer mugs for the past 6 cruises so in total have probably purchased 2 beers per person per day x 7 night cruise x 6 cruises = 168 beers. That's 168 x 5 oz = 840 free additional ounces of beer all for the price of 2 mugs ($30)

Yes, taking the token saves you from rebuying the mug or carrying it back on the ship on future cruises. So you get the extra 5 ounces of beer on future cruises. Some people have the older (bigger) mugs and carry them all the time. I just keep a token and bring it to every cruise. Easier than packing a mug.

I hadn't really thought about bringing the mug back in the future, but now I'm thinking that I will! :)

I can buy the mug on the ship correct? This is not something that I have to do in advance

The first time you order a beer, ask for it in the souvenir mug. They'll add the charge for the mug to your bill.

If you wait until you're at sea, you should not have to pay sales tax on it. Anything purchased while in port will have sales tax added.

I had my math-savvy co-worker make an Excel table to figure out the "break even point" at which the mug is free. Of course, the cost of different beers changes, and the more expensive the beer, the sooner you will break even. With $7 beers, the mug is free after 6 beers, and with $8 beers the mug is free after 5 beers.

I will say that I found it difficult to finish all 20 ounces of beer... I left a lot of beer glasses with 4 oz or so left in the bottom, so it's difficult to say if I actually "broke even." My general guidance would be if you drink at least a beer per day, get the mug. If you like the mug and want it as a souvenir, get the mug.
