Been to Chef Mickey's Dinner Buffet lately?

We have a late lunch booked at CM for tomorrow and breakfast booked Sunday morning. I've heard mixed reviews about the food so I'm not going to have high expectations...and we're not exactly picky eaters so as long as it's edible and tastes halfway decent, we're good to go!

(And my hubby actually LIKES "school lunch standard"...yeah, he's weird. :rotfl: )

We ate there on Aug 6th for my DD's birthday. We had a wonderful time because we were celebrating my daughter's b/day and we ordered a special cake. The food was just so-so & I was a little disappointed, but as another poster said, I'm glad we were on the dining plan because I wouldn't want to have to pay for it. My kids loved it, especially the dessert buffet. I really think you're paying for the character atmosphere, the food is lacking. They even lost our family picture that they take while you're waiting to be seated. I waited over 20 minutes after our dinner was over hoping that they would find it. I only wanted to purchase it because it was my daughter's birthday. They finally found it and gave it to me for free for the inconvenience.

I've been there for breakfast before and prefer it over the dinner.

Oh dear.
We won't be on the DDP. And we were going as much for the food and convenience to WL as for the characters. We really enjoyed our breakfast there years ago. I think I will look into 1900 Park Fair since so many of the posts here are negative, and they are from people who were on the dining plan. I don't want to pay OOP for bad food.

We've always loved Chef Mickey's...until this year. We actually had it booked twice while we were there, but we ended up canceling the 2nd night's ADR because it just wasn't as good as in years' past. Since we knew we had little choice of another table service ADR at that point, we ended up going to ESPN Club at Boardwalk...so much better!!!

So, some may love it, I know we used to and due to family tradition, we'll go back next year, but only once per trip.

Chef Mickeys used to be my kids FAVORITE and a MUST DO every trip - even a couple times a trip - until about a year or so ago. I think it has really gone down hill. The food is gross, the place is dirty, and the characters have even been cut back from what they used to have.:sad2:

Now I couldn't bribe my kids to go there. (I still have so many great memories of that place from years of visits and hope it will improve)

FWIW, we were there back in Dec. 2004 and it was awful on so many levels. Crowded and packed to the gills. Took us 20 minutes just to check in at the podium the line was so long. Waited another 30 minutes to be seated. The buffet was cold, dried up and practically empty of choices. When our check came and it was over $100 we decided never again. We had regular CS meals that were better quality. Now we stick with Crystal Palace for our character dining, Ohana's for our family celebration dining and Kona for awesome breakfast dining!

I am now sufficiently terrified to leave my Chef Mickey ADR's in place:scared: I have breakfast & dinner booked:guilty: It seems as though breakfast is the safer option. To anyone who can answer this,
1. Is it the number of options?
2. Type of foods ( not what the posted menus state)?
3. Quality( is it even edible?)
4. Temperature?
5. Not refilled?
6. Service?
There seem to be so many other good options, I hate to waste a meal, going in to it knowing it will be bad:crazy2:

You and me both. It took me so long to finally get a decent ADR for dinner there and I keep reading bad reviews. The food I don't care much about (in my case the blander it is the more I like it) but if character interaction is bad too then why even bother??

We've been to CM for breakfast twice and had a great time. The food was better on our 2nd trip and we had one of the latest ADRs.

We were at Chef Mickey's Aug. 10th for dinner and the food wasn't as good as it used to be,and there was fewer choices than there were in the past, don't know if it will continue to be our first night tradition next year.

I am really so shocked to hear all the negative reviews! We absolutely LOVED Chef Mickey's! Of course we've only been to Disney once, but it was one of our better meals. We were on the DDP. The food was good, the characters were great, the service was great. My kids loved it. It's a cute place. My only complaint might be the wait to get in, but even that wasn't bad. We had it much worse at Coral Reef and the food wasn't near as good. Like I said before, we will be going back on our next trip, probably more than once. This time I think we'll try breakfast. We did dinner last time.

We've always enjoyed CM's for both meals. We've gone as recently as October '06. This is disappointing to read since we'll be eating there in a couple days.

I do know that I would talk to a manager if there wasn't enough of the food they were serving (not if the options were limited, can't do anything about that, of course). It is a buffet and there's no excuse for it.

I already typed a comment but I had to reply again. If you are not on the free dining plan don't do Chef Mickey. Choose another character dinner. Crystal Palace was good. If anyone had to pay for the horrible food we had it would be a shame. My bill would have been at least 130.00. I almost want to call and let someone know how bad our dinner and breakfast was. I almost wonder with the free dining do they take that away from the quality of the food?? That is how bad it was! This was also the case last year. My sister went this year also and had the same reaction that I did.

FWIW, here's our opinions:
1. There are fewer options this year than in years past, however, if the quality of what was offered was high enough that would still be acceptable.
2. Pretty much what we expected from posted menus - not the offerings, but the quality thereof was the larger issue.
3. Hmmm...edible, yes; enjoyable, no. The flavors of some offerings (specifically the ravioli and the salmon) were bland to the point of being nonexistent. The beef was cold, the warm pastas were room temperature and pasty, the cold pasta and other cold salads (potato and seafood) had such an abundance of onion that we couldn't taste the other flavors at all.
4. Yes, see above, the temperature was an issue on several items.
5. The only thing that we had problems with being refilled were the items on the salad bar - the Caesar salad was empty both times I tried to get some (on both sides of the buffet line). Now, in all fairness, I don't know if it was just so delicious that it went that fast, but considering how large the bowls are I have a hard time believing that.
6. Service - hmmmm. CM service was on the lower end of acceptable, but still acceptable nonetheless. We did have to flag down our server to request drink refills a couple of times (yep, we were thirsty - it was hot :drinking1 ), but otherwise, he was prompt about clearing the table and had a pleasant manner.
Now, a huge problem, character interaction - or rather lack thereof. First, we did roll our eyes at the lack of Chip & Dale (they've always been there in the past). But, Minnie never did make it to our table and after 1 hour 25 minutes, we had to leave...minnie-less. Mickey was in somewhat of a hurry, but was sweet with our daughter. Goofy ruffed her hair and waved and started to saunter off, but we called him back and asked him to sign her book. He took the book and signed it and literally plopped it back on the table and started to walk off when my husband stood up and called to him that we wanted a picture, too. He walked back, stood by my daughters chair and waited for us to click and then walked off without a look or action. Then Donald came by and we did have some fun interaction with him, but then I guess he figured it was our quota and scribbled in the autograph book so fast that it's barely legible.

Worst character interaction we have EVER had at a WDW character meal. My husband started asking the manager (who was in the lobby area) if there was a problem with Minnie coming by and why the others were in such a hurry and he basically brushed us off with, "well, if you saw most of the characters, that's pretty good." At which point DH got totally ticked off and in deference to our kids, merely told him it wasn't good enough by a long shot.

Now, on a positive note, we knew we'd be going to MK and would see Minnie back by the Judge's Tent and just told our daughter that she must have had to go get her house ready for us to see the next day.

But, that was our experience. I sincerely hope that no one else's was that bad or worse. We were there for 2 weeks and had many opportunities to see each character (and many other interactions were simply wonderful), but if you aren't staying that long, that may have been the only chance, KWIM?

I'll be interested to see what everyone else's experience has been like lately.

We always do Chef Mickeys for breakfast and have always loved it. :thumbsup2 We have always had great character interaction (got the photos to prove it) and the food was ok. We have never been there for dinner. I think people expect too much for character meals. If you want the great food you need to go to some of the higher end non character meals like Yachtsman or Le Cellier. At the character meals you are not paying for the food IMHO. :rolleyes1

We were there in May for breakfast. The character interaction was great, but the food was not. :( While there was a good selection of things, most of it was below average and I'm not a picky eater. All four people in my party thought the quality of the food needed to be improved. Please be warned about the biscuits and gravy....it was so bleh! I do have to say the Micky waffles were great!

Some pictures from our visit to Chef Mickey's. Just so those with ressies don't feel that it's always a miss on character interaction.

I have more pics, but these were some of my favorites. Minnie actually sat down and interacted with my son for a good 3 minutes.

I'm sincerely pleased that so many families who've gone recently have had good interactions with the characters. We've had great experiences for 16 years (at least 2 weeks/year, and at least 7-8 character meals/trip) until this visit, so maybe there had been problems that night or scheduling conflicts for some or something that we weren't privy to. I'm sure we all know that there can be work related issues that cause discontent from time to time and I'm willing to chalk our evening up to that.

As far as character meal interactions go, we had the very best experience in front of LeCellier with Brother Bear and Koda (not a character meal, but they were so deserving of a mention and were fantastic while we waited for our seating!), we also had very nice and fun experiences at the Cinderella and Friends dinner at the Grand Floridian, with Pooh & Friends at Crystal Palace and the Princess Storybook Dinner, and with Chip & Dale (the Lands). We've also had great experiences at CM's (more than 20 times over the years) in the past, so we are quite familiar with where our expectations should be (sorry, don't remember who mentioned something about expectations, but I think it did come up), this one just really fell short and if it had been our first visit, we wouldn't consider going back. Since we have had good experiences in the past, we'll schedule them once next year, but only once.

Like I said, I'm willing to give a mulligan for one bad night, and for those that are scheduled to attend, here's some pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust: to insure that your trip is wonderful!

We were there in November '06 and thought the food was very good "buffet" food. We don't usually enjoy buffets and truthfully, I don't usually expect very much, but wanted to do the character meal for the kids. We were all (including my mother and father) pleasantly surprised that the food was as good as it was.

Has it deteriorated since then? We liked it enough that we scheduled a meal there for our next trip. :confused3

I think the problem with this restaurant is they know people will come for the characters. Is it fair to make them spend 30.00 a person to do it? I wish I would have said something while I was there. They need to be aware that their food is not up to good standards. Characters are fine but they need to think about the food also. I could stand in a line and see a character for free and my five year old would be just fine with that. I would hope they don't want people to feel that way. My next visit will not include a visit there. Even with free dining.

Dinner is ABSOLUTELY nasty food, except for the dessert bar. On the other hand, characters are great. Mickey played peek a boo with my then 7 month old son (he was quite scared of the big headed/eared thing!) from the other side of the table.

I would like to try breakfast. Might do that on our trip in February.
