What do you serve with Beef Stew?
I usually either serve it with french or italian bread or any fresh bread from the bakery and perhaps a side salad.

I'm just curious because my sister in law said the correct way is on a bed of long grain rice and no bread. Is it right or anything goes?

Just curious

Serving it with bread is fine. It may be popular to serve it on rice in some parts of the country, but it's not any more "proper" than serving it by itself in a bowl. We usually have cornbread muffins with beef stew, just because that's the way I like it. :)

LOL- The "proper" way to serve it where I am from is a bowl of stew with bannock-which is a type of bread made by us first nations people here!! Stew and Bannock is a staple for us!

Hi - this is very interesting because here in the UK, it is typically 'Beef Stew and Dumplings' :)

Dumplings (I dont know if you have these in the US) are a small 'Ball' of dough. You mix Flour, Suet and a pinch of salt together, and add water to bind it together. Pull off and shape it into small balls, I usually allow 2 per person, the ball being the size a bit larger than a ping pong ball - and then you pop them onto the top of the stew for the last 15 minutes of cooking.

They swell to say Tennis Ball size and are light and fluffy, but have the flavour of the stew on them.

Delicious. :)

in the bread bowl.....I love it in the nice winter months here....yummy.....

We'll just eat it what ever way we are in the mood for
over rice, over noodles, plain, with dumplings, with biscuits
it really doesn't matter it stew

Of all the ways mentioned, the ONE way I've never had beef stew was with rice. Sorry - it even made me grimace to think about it, although I'm not sure why!

Anyway, if it's thick enough we'll have it over wide egg noodles, but still have a firm bread like French or Italian. It's wonderful in a bread bowl & if I have the time, I'll put dumplings in/on it. (Although I do them the shortcut way - using Jiffy or Bisquick!)

I'm always lurking this board for new recipes and this thread caught my eye and I had to pipe in.

I've never had beef stew with rice either. I'm assuming the stew has the usual of carrots, potatoes, celery, onions. Maybe it's me but the rice and potato comination is a bit of a starch overkill.

I just serve it with a salad, not to overload the carbs too much.

Good thread! It's very interesting to see how everyone serves this popular dish.

Janice - What's Suet? Like Crisco or Shortening?

Suet is an animal fat. We can sometimes buy it in the meat section. Most people here buy it to put out for the birds. Years ago, my grandmother & great-aunt used to put it in their mincemeat, etc. Of course, they also used a lot of lard in their baking. That makes me shudder now - but it sure tasted good!

We just eat it without anything else. My stew has potatos, carrots, greenbeans, peas, onions and beef. It just feels like there is enough, and it is one pot and no other mess which is perfect for me!

we usually eat it with mashed potatos and a salad.

Hi wdw_dine_junkie

I think Piratesmate got it in one with the answer, it is usually animal fat, but I have to say I do use the Vegetarian option that we have here (I dont know if you have that in the USA) - it is made by Atora. And yep it goes into Mincemeat too (the sweet kind for Christmas Mince Pies ~~~ yummy) but again I use the verggie kind. I am sure it doesnt taste any different, with all the other flavours you would be hard pushed to notice the change.

Not very good for the figure but oh so tasty :)

Wagamama (Arghaven is that you??) - is that our Jamie Oliver in your siggie pictures?????? Are you a fan of him or his cooking! LOL ;)

I serve mine with herbed beer bread, crackers, noodles or rice. Depends on my mood, but bread is the most common at our house.

Janice - I'm just curious. My DD & I used to watch "Can't Cook, Won't Cook" in the mornings here on BBC America. I haven't seen it for quite some time. Is it still on there? I really enjoyed Ainsley! (sp?) Our other favorite shows are Changing Rooms & Ground Force. I told my husband that I not only want to work on GF (they have so much fun!) I want to BE Charlie when I grow up! ;)

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the responses.

Yes, it's regular beef stew with the usual of carrots, potatoes, celery, onions.

I actually tried the beef stew with rice on saturday when my sister in law came by.

I got a loaf of italian bread too just in case.

It's actually very good except that I found out you've got to eat it FAST. If not, everything turns kind of mushy.

It's was nice to try it differently but I prefer bread.

Also never heard of having it with rice. Only with salad and biscuits on the side. Maybe crackers or rolls if I'm too lazy to make biscuits.

Hi Piratesmate!

Yes - we still get Cant Cook; Wont Cook on here with Ainsley, and Changing Rooms with Carole Smiley, Ground Force with Alan, Tommy and Charlie - plus loads more besides!!!

We have channels now on Sky (like Cable) that are dedicated to House Decorating, or the Cooking Channel so we can watch them continually! They are on a lot on this house because my Mum lives with us and she enjoys watching them (she is disabled) and I often try out the recipes and ideas :)

Glad you enjoy them. I think Charlie works very hard during the programme - but she should wear more! ;)

Sorry this was off topic!

We always have beef stew over rice, even if it has potatoes in it. We live in south Louisiana and we have rice with practically every meal.

How timely! We just had beef stew with rice last night.

We have beef stew with rice all the time. Being Asian, that's the only way I have known to serve it. My DH is Caucasian and has only known beef stew with bread and mashed potatoes.
