OK before you flame me I want to make it clear this is NOT my child, if it was he would have been to a doctor the day he was stung!! A friend's son was stung on his little finger by a bee last Saturday. He is somewhat allergic and his hand was swollen to the size of a baseball when I saw him Sunday evening. (Ok, that would have been enough for me to take him to a doctor, his mom took him to the CVS pharmisists:rolleyes: ) Tonight he spending the night with my mom and I saw his hand again. His little finger is red and there is a red splotch starting at his finger and going across his hand. It is also still swollen, not as bad but still pretty bad as far as I am concerned. His mom was called and she is not concerned. She is bringing by some clothes for him and is "going to look at it." Does anyone have any experience with this type of thing? I am looking for some support to get her to take him to a doctor. I think he has an infection, but I don't have any experience with kids allergic to stings and how long the reaction can hang around. Any helpful comments and/or suggestions would be appreciated. Again, this is not my child, but I need to convince his mom he needs to see a doctor!!
Thanks!!

Last spring my ds was stung on the foot 2 days later a line started up the foot toward ankle, I took him to ped it was bacteria infection he was put on antibotics. I( It was hot to touch)

My son is allergic too. He would not have survived the first hour. It sounds like an infection to me.

I'm allergic and have varied reactions from swelling to hives & Anaphylactic shock. Since it is from Saturday he is probably safe from a major reaction but the swelling & discomfort can stay for awhile. My forehead sinus passages were swelled for 2 weeks once after I got some ant bites on my hand.

I use oral bendral when I have that type of reaction to insect bites. This will help with the swelling and itching, it makes me very tired so I take it at bedtime. If there is an open sore I'd be concerned about an infection in a child since they scratch it and are more likely to have problems caused from that.

Ok, she just arrived a few minutes ago and has agreed to take him up to the firestation and get an opinion. I told her it looked like it was infected and he needed checked out. She listened this time! :) Of course this is the 3rd time I have said something about it! Thanks for the responses and for being nice!!

Way to be persistant Carolyn! What was the mom thinking?

Sounds like an infection that has gone into his blood. He needs antibiotics now if it is. If she doesn't end up getting him looked at and it gets worse, he will go on IV antibiotics.

The firestation????? I know they're EMT's but the first place I'd go is the HOSPITAL!!! Geez, some people have no common sense!!!

Good for you for keeping after her... that poor kid needs someone to keep an eye on him!

Neither would I have survived the first hour.

This sounds like an infection, not a serious allergic reaction. He may need to see a doctor but he should be okay. He needs to get some antibiotics though as infections can spread. :(

I hope he's okay.

Well, the firestation guys told her it looks like he has an infection and he needs to see a doctor...go figure! Since they told her that she has decided that she will call the doctor in the morning. FINALLY!!! We'll see if she actually follows through. Something I have never understood about her is that she always waits until the kids are really really sick or have injuries that are infected before she will take them to see a doctor. I am one of those mom's that might give something a day to get better, but any sign of something not right and I will call the doctor.
Well, I guess I'll know in the morning what is going on. Thanks again for the support!

I'm glad she finally took him somewhere, but good grief! :earseek: All I can think is that she doesn't have insurance or something!

It's really a shame that he wasn't seen while his hand was still so swollen. According to my doctor, allergic reactions get worse each time - sometimes by a little, sometimes by a lot. If his hand was swollen that badly, the next sting could produce the kind of reaction that EsmereldaX & PigPen mentioned. A doctor would have warned her about it.

BTW - When I was little I always swelled a little & didn't know that it would get worse. I continued to go barefooted in the yard & get stung. Now I have a full blown anaphylactic reaction if I'm stung. :(
