bedwetting at hotels?

Hey all-
We've got a 4 year old who hasn't quite mastered getting up in the middle of the night to go potty... it's kind of spotty: he'll do great for 2-3 days, then have an acident.

So, how do you handle that while in park? I obviously don't want to ruin the mattress at the hotel, and honestly, I don't want to make housekeeping clean up his pee.......

We were thinking of using pull-ups, but are afraid he'll flip out. He is, after all, still himself, even in disney...)

Any ideas?

It's been a while since we used Pullups, but are any of them Disney themed? Like Winnie the Pooh, Nemo, etc (I know Swimmers are). Maybe you could convince him to wear Disney ones while he's staying there. 4 is a tough age, they want to be so independent!

Our older dd, who's 9, had a friend who still had accidents. Her mom packed Goodnites in her overnight bag when she slept over at our house. I walked into dd's room, and they were both wearing them! Dd didn't want her friend to feel alone, I guess!

The new goodnights are not that 'babyish' and I think he'd be fine with those. Either that or some special "Disney" Pullups.....you are in Disney so maybe he'll love them

Or you can buy those pee pads (either puppy or regular ones that hospitals use) and put them under him or under the sheet on his side where he'll sleep. If you put them under the sheet, you'll still have the issue of having pee on the sheet, but you could always run down and do the sheets yourself at the coin laundry. If you put them above the sheets, directly under him, you may want to lay a towel or something over them....as they are kind of 'plastic' sounding when you move around at night. We used to have to use these for our doggy when she had bladder issues and have also seen them at hospitals (labor and delivery). They soak up a lot.

During my sons first trip to Disney World we used puppy pads (they are used for house trained dogs to use the bathroom on -- just in case you didn't know). We would lay one or two of them on top of the sheets and then place a towel over them just in case it was ever an issue of him wetting the bed. I don't think he ever had an accident in Disney but we use this method at my inlaws house and whenever he had an accident we would just take up the towel & puppy pads and redo them. I don't believe we have ever had a time where the sheet was wet. If you try this idea and are still worried about it, you can always place a pad under the sheets as well so none will leak onto the mattress. I'm sure housekeeping has had waaaaay worse things happen. I would then just strip the bed myself.

I'm not sure how much the puppy pads are to buy but if they are extremely expensive ask around to some friends to see if they use them.

We did pull ups with our daughter. We explained they were just for Disney and we would rather be safe than sorry and we didn't want her to feel bad if she had an accident. She agreed to wear them so good luck!

I bought waterproof pads in the infant section at Target--I think they are changing table pads. They are not thick at all. I put them inside of a pillowcase and my ds just lays on that when we travel. I also keep one under his sheet at home--it's so much easier in the middle of the night to only have to change the top sheet and not have to worry about the mattress pad! Hope that helps!

Recently our problem wasn't with a child but a senior member of our family. No shame at all in accidents however he was ticked at us for even mentioning depends. Stubborn old fart he is . We got one of the mattress covers from JCPennys and while he was out put it on the bed so he wouldn't realize that it was on there. The Pee Pee pads work great however because they crinkle and shift he would have figured out is was there. The covers are great for kids too because they are unaware they are there and it doesn't make them self concious. The other wonderful thing is that they are washable so you can take it home, wash it and reuse it again and again.I know you can find them at places like Target, Walmart, Pennys and Sears but Mattress Stores also have them but Im pretty sure they are probably more expensive there.

We have used two things. The first thing we did was to bring a blow up air mattress and my son slept on that on the floor. He loves that he gets his own bed, and I feel better in case there is an accident. I learned about the second thing on a thread on this board, and it was the pads that they use in hospitals. I bought some on our last Disney trip. You can find them in the adult diaper section at Wal Mart. They were relatively inexpensive and worth the piece of mind.

thanks for all the replies guys: I do have to say that it astonishes me what someone will forget, even when it's right in front of one's face.

I work in a hospital, and see those pads (called "chux pads") almost every day.

Just incase anyone is wondering but I "believe" the pads they use a the hospital and the puppy pads are the same thing. I remember using those pads in the hospital after both my children were born and I think they are identical to puppy pads. Some people may not have access to the hospital pads.

You can buy them on eBay for really cheap too If you can't find them at the store.

Try bringing a towel from home (so you don't destroy any hotel towels) and stick it under him while he sleeps at night (then just wash it off and hang it dry). That would at least help protect the sheets if he has an accident.

I also tend to think that a pullup would be the easiest to use. After all, those bed pads would work, but wouldn't it also mean that if your child had an accident while sleeping, you'd still have wet pajamas to wash in the morning? And what if that accident woke him up in the middle of the night, which means one or both parents would also have to get up. What if your child tosses and turns in their sleep, the pad moves, and then end up getting the sheets wet anyway? Seems like a hassle versus just tossing a wet pullup in the trash.

I can understand your child not being happy with the idea of wearing one, but you are his parents and know what is best for him, and like others have said, they do have Disney designs on them, which might help convince him to wear them.

Or, you never know -your son may not wet once the entire time you're on vacation because they're sleeping in a strange bed, new environment, etc. My former stepson was like that -he'd be wet every single night of the year except for when we went away on vacation, then he'd be dry to the bone.

I'd definitely go with Pull Ups. Just tell him they are ONLY for the trip. Explain to him that, among other things, he might have SO much fun that he'll be SO tired and his body will "forget" to wake him up if he has to "go". I've heard of this happening to much older kids at WDW...

When we take our boys for the first time, they'll be almost 5 and 3. I plan to put them both in pull ups at night, regardless of what stage of potty training they are in. We will have a 5.5 hour plane trip too, and you can bet they'll both be in pull ups for that too. It's just too hard to get to the bathroom on a plane every time you need to "go", especially for kids.

They will suffer no long term harm from wearing pull ups at night at WDW...
