Bedroom Doors

Do you sleep with your bedroom door closed? Kids?
I sleep with the door open, I always have for a variety of reasons.
When the kids were young, I left their doors open until they fell asleep.. also for a variety of reasons
All doors used to always be open, but as my kids got older, they started closing there's and I closed my youngest so she could go to sleep at a reasonable time and now that my oldest are late teens; I also close my door because they're always up later than me. If I were at home alone; it'd definitely be open.

Closed. I live in an apartment by myself and if somebody breaks in, I want something between them and me.
Interesting...that's most of why I would want it open...so I could hear if someone broke in or something. The poster who said closed and locked I could maybe get on board with, if I didn't have kids.

When I was a kid, all bedroom doors were closed, but now as an adult with kids, all bedroom doors are open.

Closed. Dick Van Dyke's fire safety PSAs when I was a kid taught me to keep my bedroom door closed and in the case of fire to put my hand on it to see if it was hot. I still heed Mr. Van Dyke, God Bless him.

I used Dick to wake my sleepy high school daughter back when she was that age... It was Kick Your Knees Up Rise and Shine, Kick Your Knees Up Rise and Shine.... Usually worked to bring her out of her morning funk. I even danced like Dick Van Dyke....

Currently closed
When my girls were young always open

Those PSAs were from the 70’s and 80’s which was prior to the use of smoke alarms in most homes. It can’t hurt to keep the door closed, but I don’t think it’s unsafe to keep it open.

I'm in the I have a cat so it's always open group. You cannot close a door with a cat around!
The cats were why we started CLOSING the door. Nobody got any sleep when Potter and Weasley were in the room!
Let's see... when DD was very young, we left the bedroom doors ajar, so we could hear her if she got up in the night. Once we got the cats, we closed the doors as they would "play" with our feet at night. Now, with 3 generations in the household, bedroom doors are always closed. DH and I keep ours open in the summer when it's really hot (no central a/c here in Maine) but DD/SIL keep theirs closed (window a/c unit) and they keep The Boy's room closed, too, although all he has is a fan in the summer. In the winter we have to keep the doors closed; there is no heat in the hallways of this old house, and we'd all freeze if we didn't enclose the heat in the bedrooms!

Like someone said above, I don't worry about fire safety as much with multiple smoke alarms in our home but it is still a habit. We keep it closed AND we have a lock that we used when we had kids living here and we wanted privacy. We just made doors closed a policy after the kids were a certain age. The kids learned to keep their doors closed too. It certainly helps if you want to sleep in and other people are up and around!

No one has mentioned this, but here goes. My parents always slept with their door closed, but I remember when a friend of mine in school had told me she and her siblings had figured out that sometimes their parents close the door when it was usually kept open and why that might be. :scared: I never wanted to give the kids a reason to speculate so we just generally closed it!

I'm in the "open - cats" camp. I like when they come by for one last ear scratch and purr at me before I go to sleep. Plus, I grew up in house where they were always open. It's just habit.

I may have to start closing it, though. One of the cats has started waking me up to ask for treats in the middle of the night. :confused3

Open when my girls were little so I could hear if they got up in the middle of the night (my girls, especially my oldest, were big thrower uppers)

Closed when they were older

Open now that it’s just DH and I - the room gets stuffy when the door is closed

Back door is right outside my bedroom door and is not very secure. In the event of a fire, I'd rather chance running out of the bedroom and putting a shoulder to the door to get out than try to bust out the storm window plus the 3 pane window.

Always closed until this house. There isn't great air circulation upstairs, so I leave it open a crack. I couldn't fall asleep if it was wide open, just not what I'm used to.
