Bedding Report is simply GROSS!

Well, I do change clothes - I was referring to the fact that my fiance and I don't hang around without clothes on. We don't run back from the parks, rip all our clothes off and have a drink. We may be in the minority, but we also don't sit down on the bed to change clothes, at home or away. We must be weird. And we don't have children yet, so I can't speak for children running around naked. I'm 27 and I can't remember back to my early childhood regarding the percentage of time I was clothed.

Everyone has different thresholds of what bothers them. I agree that I would love to see the bedding completely changed between each guest, not that it'll ever happen due to costs, manpower, and environmental concerns. I was simply saying that if we continue to think of all the nasty and disgusting things that are out there in the world (many of them mentioned here ;) ) that we will drive ourselves crazy. It's difficult, but sometimes you have to try to push it out of your mind (and if you can't, you can always ask for clean bedding).

We just got back also and took the bedspread out and put them in the closet and a note attached to it to not put it back on the bed since mousekeeking did put them back on the next day but not after we left a note.

Also when we were at Coronodo springs walking to our room, we could see a lot of windows open and people were sleeping in just their shorts on the bedspreads and in another window a grandma was lying on the side of the bedspread with her face inside the bedspread where the pillows are. All this while walking back to our room:eek: and since you can see the windows in the hallways.

I am sure a lot of people jump, sit, sleep on them and they are never changed and happens at most of all the hotels in Orlando but I can see why they do not change them because there are so many rooms they have to get cleaned by a certain time for new checkins and existing customers and the time it takes to clean the room etc and is surprising that the first thing a guest usually lays stuff on or sits on is the thing that is not cleaned.:teeth:

Do you think that if all the Dis'ers begin to request clean bedspreads and blankets, a general statement would be made (much like the room request faxes) that they cannot honor every request for new bedding? Depending on the hotel, I imagine that housekeeping may be a little put out about it. Last July at the GF, housekeeping acted like we were requesting that the Castle to be moved closer to our balcony when we requested they vacuum our room, bring us extra hangers, and actually clean the balcony (all separate requests during an 11-day stay, and two of the three shouldn't have been requests at all).

I will always!!! Take my bedspread off now. After my stay in Tampa, for those who may not know this I will tell my tale......
I took the bedspread down and noticed something on the spread, it was fecal matter!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A bit hunk of it!~!!!!!!!
Yes I was digusted!!!!! And yes it definately was feces!!!!
Sooooo I will always take off my spread and inspect the sheets (I also bring my own pillow~

I'm with zurgswife. I'm on chemotherapy, a nurse and a frequent traveler to WDW and am quite sure that I have not contracted any dreaded diseases from the used comforter. Dry linens are not a huge incubator for bacteria. I use reasonable judgement and in fact out of 10 visits, I have not been sick once. I am not saying that I wouldn't personally be delighted with newly laundered bedspreads etc.. Threehearts

I'm an RN too, and I've never gotten sick after ANY trip, but I still think used, unwashed bedding is pretty darned disgusting. I don't want to get naked with several strangers' microbes and body fluids, thank-you-very-much! Besides, people can and do catch nasty things on dry surfaces--lice and scabies, for example. People get WAY too up-close-and-personal on beds for me to want to sleep on/with used linens.

BTW, when I worked on the pediatric floor of my hospital, one of our patient's parents caught head lice from sleeping on a couch in the patient waiting room. You never know who slept on the linen (or the couch) before you!

I also have worked with kids who were immune suppressed, and they did catch nasty (and sometimes life-threatening) infections from the environment. Remember, just because you haven't caught anything, doesn't mean other people haven't.

Do you guys carry those toilet seat covers around, and put them down everywhere you sit, even on rides? I mean, someone else's pants have been there, and that's just gross, right? Do you wear latex gloves and breathing masks in the park? I mean, someone else may have exhaled, or touched a door knob. All the time you spend sanitizing, and wiping, and cleaning, could be spent doing what your supposed to do on your vacation, having a good time.

Nope, I don't, and NOBODY except you mentioned toilet seat covers, latex gloves, and "all the time spent sanitizing and wiping."

I can't believe that so many people thought comforters were cleaned just like the sheets. Since I was a child, when we stayed in a hotel room, my mom would say not to touch the comforter b/c they aren't cleaned between guests, only touch the sheets.

I mean, you can be paranoid about not touching the remote, floor, doorknobs, and bed linens- but what kind of vacation is that? As long as you not like licking the beadspread I wouldn't worry about getting sick. I haven't heard of many people coming down w/some horrible disease from sitting on a bedspread. -Stephanie

Now on my list,,,, throw bedspreads in washing machine when we check in (thank goodness and DVC for having a washer/dryer in the room)::yes::

I'm not sure you could wash the king or queen bedspreads in the washing machine in the room. I think you would need a large capacity washer.

I always pull the comforter down at night and I fold the sheet over the top of the blanket. Other than that, I don't worry about it or anything else in the room. If the comforter or blanket was obviously dirty, I would request a new one. It would be nice if they changed them between guests but logistically it would be impossible. It would be better if they double sheeted the beds.

I think it would be more likely to catch something from touching the ride surfaces where hundreds have passed or breathing the air in the airplane.

Amen! Finally, common sense! People, don't freak out. Have a sense of humor. To walk around a htoel room wearing surgical gloves, or paranoid because your butt cheeks made contact with a bed spread, or because you touched the TV remote, is absurd.

As long as you follow some logical directions - fold the bedspread at the foot of your bed and don't lick the carpet - you're not going to die of SARS.

AGAIN..this is NOT mainly about catching something..its just about GROSS fluids etc. that are left on these bedspreads that you could end up touching..its just GROSS is all!

I snuggle up in the blanket and bedspread and never give it a thought...:sunny: :sunny: :sunny:

Truthfully, there are many more worse and disgusting things we could be having to deal with ---just watch the news. I am a total grossed- out-by-hotel-bedding person, but when put into perspective, as many of these posts have done for me, in the end at least I am going to Disney where most everyone there is just like me and I'm not really all that gross (especially on vacation with DD, DS AND DH all in the same room). :p

Cinderella37- what I was referring to was not hanging around without clothes on- or even saying you were out of the norm to not sit down on the bedding naked to change clothes. I was referring to your comment about ALWAYS being clothed. When it comes to hotel rooms where people are LIVING, changing, sleeping, having marital or otherwise relations on the bedding, etc. all in one room- there is BOUND to be times that you'll be on or around that bed while not fully clothed. That is what I meant. And I meant you weren't the norm if you were ALWAYS fully clothed... even in a hotel room.

I also did not say anything about children "running around naked". Please don't expand and make up stuff I didn't say nor imply. Changing into a swimsuit and sitting their tush on the bed to do so because children don't always have the best balance to put on the swimsuit standing up is a FAR cry from "running around naked"- thank you very much. We change in the bathroom- our young children do not go lock themselves in a bathroom to change into a swimsuit- they require help usually and aren't quite the ages that they desire privacy when changing... yet.

I don't sit down to change clothes either... never said you did or would be weird not to. I said my CHILDREN have done so... there is a difference between you/I and children.. that being they don't have the same balance and have a more difficult time getting swimsuits on.
But I DO happen to get naked in, on or around beds... my kids didn't come from the stork yanno. ;)

Thank you. So many want to turn this into "if you want clean bedding then I guess you want to wipe everything in your room, where you go, etc. down with chlorox wipes" and it's so not the same thing. We do NOT worry about everything we touch- but it's still gross to think about bedding not being cleaned.

Oh and to those that mention wiping down the room when you check in... you better do that every day because you DO realize that the mousekeeper is coming in to clean and not only touching those things again but quite likely wiping them down with washclothes used in other rooms too, etc. ;)

I was always taught, too that you fold the sheet over the comforter and never let the comforter touch you while sleeping in a hotel.

I have also heard the remote control can be one of the most germ infected things in your own home!

Really, though I know if we analyzed everything in the rooms we could all get grossed out, but the truth is there are germs everywhere.

One of the problems is we now have everything antibacterial and it is going to kill our immune systems.

I'm not too worried about the rooms, but I would still like to know if they wash that inner blanket between guests....

Hi there- I've also worked as pediatric RN in the largest Pedi ICU in the country for quite some time and while I agree that lice is fairly easy to get using bedding from an infected person, I do not think that terrible things will happen from a dirty comforter. I would be surprised if you have had a patient come in with a bad infection gotten from sheets. I never have but that certainly doesn't mean it has never happened. As far as immunosuppression goes, we are told to avoid hot tubs, kiddie pools(much higher ecoli factor than comforters) and obviously ill people. The immunolgist has never instructed me to avoid hotel bedding.
I completely agree that dirty bedding is disgusting and naturally I would hope that all hotels have clean comforters but I don't expect it. If a family wants clean linens they should not be questioned in any way and I think WDW should treat this as a guaranteed request. I fully respect your point and just want to explain where I am coming from. Honestly, every time I get a mouthful of Poly pool on a crowded August afternoon, I just say a little prayer that junior hasn't done his thing too close to me. Have a good one... Threehearts

"Really, though I know if we analyzed everything in the rooms we could all get grossed out, but the truth is there are germs everywhere."

I agree completely, lenshanem! This is how obsessive kinds of stuff starts...when people think too much about what other people may or may not have done in any area that people share. The best way to handle it is to just not spend any time or energy thinking about it as it isn't particularly dangerous.

My oldest just got back from 10 days in the BWCA and we were laughing about him getting a drink and looking up after he finished to see a deer using the edge of the water as a toilet(smile). He said it's just better not to think too much about all of the animals and fish that have used the lakes that way, as it isn't dangerous and a person doesn't want to get paranoid(smile).

Zurgswife, I am loving your comments on this thread. I am in complete agreement with you. :D

The washer in the DVC units are not large enough to wash a Queen or King comforter. You will only result in damaging the washer.
