Bed Bugs

FYI

Bed bugs can and sometimes do bite on the legs only. That was my experience when we encountered bed bugs in Italy. Definitely proven to be bed bugs! My DH either didn't get bites or didn't react to them. Some people apparently react more strongly than others. Unfortunately, I now know that I am like a litmus test for bed bugs! Those bites itch like crazy.

Always inspect your hotel room carefully and if you have any reason to suspect exposure to bed bugs - examine your luggage carefully before you bring it into your home. These little critters can be difficult to exterminate.

Op for your sake I hope you have not brought your luggage in the house. For future readers if this happens do not leave the hotel until you have proof. I am sure if they were bed bugs Disney would have sorted out your flight and things. Now even if you contact Disney there is not much that they can/will do. And always check for bed bugs before putting stuff in the room. Also getting bed bug mattress covers is always a plus. I have them in our bed and 3 guest bedrooms as you never know what luggage will pick up on the plane ride.

There's not a lot you can do now. Try not to worry. I always end up covered in bites every time I go to Disney. I'm pretty sure I've had a spider bite or 2 also. I always thoroughly check the beds when these bites come up but there's just no signs of anything. Disney has stark white sheets so I would check for specks of blood. No signs of anything behind the bed or headboards. Husband and kids had nothing. Only me! Just lucky I guess...

Disney can and will take action after you've left the resort. Try calling (407) 939-6104. Ideally, it would have of course been best to address this on-site for immediate action. But oftentimes these bites don't appear until you've returned home. My friend's family encountered this same issue at Pop Century, but didn't realize it until returning home. They called Disney, which was able to confirm the room had bedbugs. Disney was very appreciative that they called this to their attention so it could be corrected. They did compensate them generously--I can't remember the specifics, but my friend was expecting nothing and really felt Disney went above and beyond. I don't want to even speculate on the compensation since I can't remember specifically, but make sure you mention any medical bills you might encounter if there are any related to this. It seems like Disney wanted to know if they sought medical attention. Probably because their daughter was still very young at the time, as a precaution.

bed bugs often bite in sets of 3, also known as the breakfast lunch and dinner(bld) pattern. how do your bites look? There are so many insects that can cause bites, just because you didn't feel the bites doesn't necessarily mean bed bugs. I really hope it is not. good luck.

In all seriousness, take photos of your legs and include them in the email. Email Disney with the room #, date(s) of stay, etc.

In case this is helpful, another disboards thread lists the Pop Century phone number as 407.938.4000. I would alert them right away so they can check the room and confirm. If it is bed bugs, they'll probably compensate you for treatment, etc.

I have taken pics of my legs and you are right, my legs look a whole lot worse today than they did when i left on saturday morning. Im hoping to contact them tomorrow. Will let you know what happens.

Bed bugs hitch rides. If it was indeed bed bugs, you may have brought them home with you, so luggage and clothing you brought with you on that trip should be quarantined and then cleaned. And the next guests in that room may be dealing with them too. Don't wait, it's been almost a week already. Once they're in, they are a pain to get rid of.

So, I have left a voice mail message with Disney and followed it up with an email. I'll post if they get back to me.

Thanks to all of you for your responses above. ☺

If it is just your legs and you were the only one impacted it is very doubtful that it was bedbugs. Look up Disney rash and check those images out.

I agree. If no one else was impacted, I'm thinking it might be "Disney rash" also. I only have had it once in all of my trips. First day looks like bites. Subsequent days it spreads out and looks bad.

I have heard back from disney claims where i left the voice mail and was told that the room had been inspected by a professional and that it came back negative. She couldnt explain how i got bites on my legs and neither can i since i felt nothing biting me.

The email i sent to their wdpr address contained pictures but i havent heard back from them. Since i have already been conctacted by disney claims, i dont really expect to hear from anyone else.

Also, i examined my suitcase and did not find any evidence that i may have brot any bugs back with me so im happy about that!

It could be the disney rash on your legs. Google the pictures of the disney leg rash. If you don't have bed bug bites, it could be the disney rash.

I got it one year, and my legs looked terrible - they were covered in red bumps, which could have been mistaken for bites.

If it is the rash (solar dermatitis), some over the counter steroid cream will heal it right up :)

Oh, and Disney uses the cutest beagles to check rooms for bed bugs. We saw them one trip at BWV. There were 2 beagles and their handlers going to a villa to check for bed bugs!

If you even think you have a bed bug problem at Disney, you should be immediately reporting it. It's for your sake as well as other guests. It's not your fault for getting a room with them. But not mentioning it until the next guest is ready to move into the room is a not-so-nice move, because neither they nor Disney knew about it, and now that guest has to be the one to deal with the situation when that could have been prevented.

Like everyone has stated, they hitch rides and you do not want to be dealing with having them at home. It's a nightmare, especially financially, since you can end up having to get a professional to remove them, plus the added cost and time of cleaning or destroying a lot of your clothing and bedding, even upholstery like carpeting & furniture.

Bedbugs have only occurred once between all of my friends who go yearly. They gave immediate notice to the front desk, and Disney covered the cost of cleaning their clothes, getting them an allowance for new ones, and upgraded their resort stay to a deluxe. Not going to say that Disney is going to give everyone an upward upgrade, but at the very least, you should be moved to a new location after your stuff has been inspected so you aren't spreading them around.
