Bed-bugs!

I've just been reading on www.doingflorida.com news page that there is an increased problem with bed-bugs in hotels and one case was at Disney All-Star Movie resort. I'm sure this problem can happen at even the best of hotels but the most amusing part of the report was that local officials are saying one of the reasons for increased problems is because of more international travellers!!!!!!Excuse me......I can assure you I am definitely bug free, will we be screened for bugs at the airport soon too?

Yes it will now be manditory to get deloused before entering the gates of WDW.

I saw a special or it may have been SWA Airplane show that a man tried to get on the plane and he was so dirty they wouldn't let him.

Well when they opened his suitcase to get fresh cloths for him hundreds of cockroaches went scurrying around the ground.

So Bugs are part of traveling

Sometime in the last couple years, there was an instance where a woman was put off a long-distance train (don't recall which train - somewhere out west I think) because her luggage was infested with cockroaches. She was apparently completely unconcerned about the problem.

Back in the 1990's I had the displeasure to stay in a Days' Inn once. We came away with the conclusion that the motel was being converted to a Bug's Life theme, seeing as how it had live bugs making an appearance in every room.

I have to chime in here. I manage a hotel in the USA and long ago worked in a youth hostel. Not to say that Americans don't transport bed bugs, but the problem more often than not does originate with both European travelers and Latin/South American travelers, particularly those who bring their own linens, pillows, etc. In most cases, the bugs are transported in their clothing and luggage.

I know some of you will take offense to this but it's just the way it is. I'm not prejudice - I still travel to those places, but a majority of cases are brought from these origins. Currently, in my hotel, we have a major European airline that stays on a daily basis, and we have nothing but problems with the bugs that end up infesting the rooms they leave behind. I can't explain why this is, but we charge them for the clean-up and move on.

The real victims are the next guest who stays in that room who then becomes infected. We end up paying for their medical bills and the previous foreign travelers continue spreading the problem. It's a lose-lose situation. But for anyone who ignores/doesn't believe/criticizes the idea that bed bugs are an epidemic from foreign sources is being politically correct and realistically foolish.

Excuse me while I pick myself up off the floor after reading the above comment.......what a load of rubbish!!

What it really comes down to is you get people from all walks of life and from all countries, yes this includes locals, who bring this problem. It's not just international tourists!

Anyway, when I wrote that I knew someone who fit the description would write back and defend themselves. It's always hardest for those responsible for a problem to recognize their own wrongdoing and rectify it.

I may just have to check I'm not bringing anything (as in bugs) home with me next time I visit. These things work both ways you know!

This is my biggest fear when going on vacation.....New York hotels have a huge problem with this, I would imagine Orlando must be ground zero for this kind of thing with the amount of travellers it gets....and I think it has nothing to do with where your from, just where you've stayed

Unfortunately, as my Wife and I discovered to our horror, there are now bedbugs at some Disneyworld hotels. Even worse, some of them apparently hitched a ride back to our home in my pillow, which I habitually bring on trips to help me sleep in a new bed. We had to hire a professional exterminator, as well as the expense of a new king size mattress, pillows and bedding. Fortunately, only our bed was affected as our kids used the hotel pillows. I guess I will have to change this habit, as my exterminator said that this is the most likley way to bring the critters home. The only hotels that we've been to the past few months have been the All Star Movies and the Beachclub. Most likely we picked them up at the All Star Movies, as I have read online that there have been other complaints of bedbugs at this hotel. I have also read of some complaints of them at the Polynesian. Be sure to check for little black dots on the mattress when you check in. This is not the bugs, which hide during the day, but their feces. I should add that my wife and I are FL residents who have made at least 15 trips to Disney in the past 10 years, and the quality of housekeeping has really gone downhill lately.

My neighbor has a bedbug detection business - he has three trained dogs that he takes to hotels all over the United States. Guess he needs to take his "professional noses" to inspect the world.

YUCK! now I have the heebie-jeebies!!! And we love ASMo too! We basically wipe down the entire hotel room with bleach wipes as soon as we check in, and take the comforter off the bed, and check the sheets before we even think of crawling into bed. Now I'll be super-paranoid next trip since we'll be staying there again next trip - I hope we have no unexpected guests, eww!

It is best to always keep you luggage of the floor and leave your clothes in you bags and not on the drawers, as bed bugs live in the wood and come out at night....most likely if your room is infested you will know by the bite marks you get when you sleep...if so, burn everything, buy new clothes and go home with nothing!!

Okay I am new at this bed bug thing! How do I know they are there!!!!!!!

First of all when I read the posting from Condorman I didn't take offense at all. I didn't take it that he/she was disrespecting the "people" of different countries. But the bugs!!!! Let's face it where we live there are different bugs. I live in the northern part of the US. The only thing in most houses up here are a few spiders and at certain times of the year ladybugs. It is just too DAMN COLD! Now when I go to the south there are things there I have never seen before! aka excuse the spelling... Palmetto Bugs The same can be said for other countries. There are bugs that people are used to seeing and they don't think anything of it! Just like me and my ladybugs!

So I am heading to CSR in April... What do I look for!!!!!

This is freaking me out... I will pack my flashlight and inspect the room when I get there, and we will be at ASM also... eeeek! I will pack all my clothes in ziplock bags, everything will be in ziplocks and I will put my suitcase in the bathtub... then we are off to OKW, where I will have to do the whole inspecting of the room all over again ha! and again no suitcase on the beds or floor. We won't bring pillows from home and everything will get dry cleaned once home... am I going over board?
