Becoming sensitive to hair color. Any alternatives?

I have started to get grey hairs-more than just a few-so I go and get my hair colored.

It has started to bother me. My scalp itches for days and feels like it's burned.

What can I do? I'm only 34. I'm not about to let my hair turn grey. :sad2:

Are there any products out there made for situations like this?

Thanks for any help. :sunny:

Did you talk to your hair dresser? There are actually many different products that they can use on your hair depending on how your hair handles the color. I only found this out after listening to my hair dresser talk about how some people's hair won't hold color.

You need to talk to your hairdresser. There is probably *something* out there that will not cause a reaction.

The other thing that might work is to get a highlight (not color) with a cap. This will protect your scalp. It won't cover everything, but it does cover enough.

There are a LOT of products for coloring hair - you may be allergic to one ingredient in one particular brand dye - or perhaps the peroxide level theyre using is too high (what color are you? if youre blonde, odds are theyre using a high volume)

Talk to your hair person. Redken makes a non-lift formula (Shades EQ) which simply deposits color (so does Sebastian) - might be exactly what you need.

Or - for-go color altogether, and start using color shampoo & conditioner. They make them highly pigmented now, and you can skip color-dye if all you want is color depositing.

It really sounds like this might be a peroxide issue, though. My g/f went through a blonde stage and used 40 volume with a Ultra Lift 12 color - her head burned & itched for at least a week afterwards...but she *was* a stunning blonde. :teeth:

I feel your pain! At 24 I found my first grey - but it didin't get bad till about the last 5 years or so - am 39 now. I've colored off and on the past 5 years but the last year or so I've been doing it myself. My only problem is that it seems to be really drying my hair out and I'm not sure what to do about it...

Where is that "bride of frankenstein" smilie when you need her! Cause that's about how my grey has been coming in. I'm sure on a man it would look "distinquished".

It happens to the best of us, mine started when I was 18. Now I'm 30 and its getting worst. Just embrace it, chicks dig the salt and pepper look!! :woohoo:

Nevemind, your not a dude!! Opps, my bad - :rotfl2:

I know. I love the way it looks on men but I hate the way it looks on me.

I have dark brown hair. I have mentioned it to my hair dresser and she does put something on my scalp before she uses the color. She also trys to stay away from the scalp as much as she can. I'll talk to her again next time I see her.

She's tried doing it like highlights with the foils but it just doesn't cover the grey.

I have the same problem. I tried all sorts of products. I now have my hairdresser color it, but I still react and have itching for a week following each color treatment. I didn't use to have the problem. It just started within the past few years. Good luck!

Maybe our "old" skin just gets sensitive.

I never used to have a problem with eyebrow waxing but now I get all red and break out in hives for days. Ugly, I tell you.

My old hairdresser was allergic to haircolor. She had to use henna based coloring formulas, and then she was fine.

There are options for you.
