Becoming Lean, Mean, Endurace Event Machines in 2008

Good mornin'!
Vic..I just knew that you'd appreciate the movie Cars. I think I'm with you in the "no-twitch" club.
Beth..:pixiedust: hope you're feeling better soon.
Mike...thanks for all the input about heel pain. I have shoes that are pretty new and I really like them, I'm just wondering if I need a different kind of support.
Panda...Speeding up and your heart rate in going down. Rock on!
Stacie...Awesome trip report and I stand with Deb, y'all are so cute together.
Deb...Ooooo...you're movin' up. Let the better dressers see you sweat. I'm figuring that you'll probably see even more people biking and running who are just as sweaty! We are House watchers, too. Thanks for all the links, that will be a useful tool for me.
Lisa...thanks for all the "twitch" info. I have to read through it again and then try the test.
Connie...the heel pain just started last week and it's pretty inconsistent. I'm going to stretch out really well and keep icing it.
Maria...You go girl! Get on that bike. I hope it's pretty where you are, it's rainy icky here.
I'm on the TM today due to the rain. Then, it's up to school for a teacher's going away party. Then a cub scout activity. Whew! Those pancakes that popped up again from Deb really are awesome. We've made them 3 times and have PR'd on our times after we eat them. It may all be in our heads, but they seem to provide the perfect mix for energy.
Happy day, Lean Meaners!

Maybe I'm no-twitch too! lol!

I do have one question...Does the test need to be done w/ free weights or can you also do it with one of the machines?

Stacie

There is no reason that you cannot use a machine. It is harder to have a spotter with a machine sometimes but if you are more comfortable with this, then please use the machine.

Everyone please remember that this is just a general eval of you muscle fibers. You cannot have an accurate measurement without an invasive muscle biopsy. This is purely for your information only and to help you with your training. I certainly do not want someone finding out that they are fast twitch b and thinking they can never do another marathon....:guilty:

Thanks Lisa. So...Can I do the Leg Press machine? Or is is better to the squat? I really like the leg press for some reason. Makes me feel strong! :goodvibes

No worries. I think it's pretty cool and very interesting...this type of stuff!

Good afternoon meaners! I did check in earlier :surfweb: but I didn't have time to reply.

LTO today......I hate when that happens! :headache: Things are sort of wacky today, and I still am down with this cold/allergy thing. I had to go to the doc today for a refill of my migrane medicine, and he gave me a prescription for a nasal spray for my allergies. We see if that helps. :confused3

The grocery store today, was again an eye opener! The cost of food is so bad right now. I did save $80 today with coupons, but it still is pretty bad. Hard to eat healthy when food costs so much!

I did eat much at all today.....no time. I did try a South Beach wrap today. It was really good.....lots of fiber in the wraps.

I don't think I will run today.....my chest is still congested. Its like breathing through a straw

Lisa: You are full of such good advice! Thanks for all you 'instruction'....I appreciate all the information.

Big Vic: I am hanging in there!

Maria: I hate the no exercise days.....sigh :guilty:

Mike: You are the workout machine.....good job!

:wave2: to everyone else!!!

Beth

Another hour, 18 miles on the bike.

Interesting that the same clothes you freeze in at 40 degrees, you cook in at 54 degrees....

It seems like only in Chicago can you be both underdressed and over dressed in the same day wearing the same stuff!

Mike

Vic: Thanks for the links; they definitely make me feel like I need to tweak my WOs. (Tweak, overhaul, rebuild the vroomy engine....all of the above.)

Lisa: First, thanks so much for the "test." It seems like I'll never be done with school. :rotfl2: I'll have to take it when I get back, but I'll be interested in know the results. I'm also intrigued by the peppermint oil solution to migraines--how does that work?

Mike: 40 degrees? I love Chicago for many reasons, including the fact I don't live there when it's chilly like that. You probably haven't packed up your winter clothes yet, huh? Great job on the bike--are you biking on flat courses? How are you handling the wind? Just curious. There will be no sustained outdoor biking for me until sometime in June--post move.

Stacie, Lisa, Connie, all: Muscle-y legs are sexy. As are defined shoulders. Meeooorrrrowsa!

Connie: You ARE the cat's pajamas! Stronger, better, faster. Are you sure you're not bionic? I want to work my upper body more and would like to see more (some) definition there.

Maria: If it helps with your motivation, I'll whine about Ohana needing your miles. I'm tapering this week, so my numbers are way down. (And I'm a little cranky about not working out so often, but I know it's best for Sunday.) I tend to gain weight from my thighs up first, and lose weight from my chest down. That's why the girls are toddlers, I guess.

Tracey: You're right. In the "moving on up" neighborhood--wish I were living in a penthouse in the sky--there are a lot of college-age runners, commuter bicyclists (there are two bike shops in Squirrel Hill), and folks who appear to be generally athletic/fit/active. I often think about the the connections between exercise, nutrition (as Beth said, healthy food costs so much), and socio-economic class: the higher one's socio-economic status, the more likely one is to be healthy (let alone have access to health care). It certainly seems to hold true for what I know about Pgh neighborhoods. Maybe your heel pain is your shoes, then? How were they on the TM?

Beth: I hope the nasal spray helps and your congestion ends soon so that you can run. Good job with the eating today, despite a lack of time. I regularly experience sticker shock when it comes to food, and am grateful that it's that time of year when the local farmer's markets are getting started again. It's so much easier and cheaper to eat organic & locally in the summer. We applied for an urban gardening space, but didn't get it this year.

Re: vegetarian/vegan supplements. I didn't even think that people who are allergic to shellfish might also benefit from their availability! :thumbsup2 I can't imagine being a nutritionist/RD, etc. and having to take all these things into account with one's clients. For those who are interested, I get my vitamins from my local food coop, so I don't know how available they at chain stores. (Of course, there's always the internet, but none of spend any time there, do we? :surfweb: :rotfl2:)

Re: the pancake recipe. Tracey's the one who found & tried the pancakes--and she gives them rave reviews; I just pasted the recipe here. (She was the responsible one and pasted it on the WISH food/nutrition forum.)

Again, I hope no one minds the indexing. I didn't include all the great information/conversations we had--tried to keep it to stand-alone information as much as possible. Let me know if I missed anything, if anything should be removed, or anything that should be added. I can't tell you how much I've learned being a member of this thread. THANK YOU! :grouphug:

As for me: Can someone explain to me why Justin Timberlake's "Sexyback" is on my iPod, and why I always giggle when I listen to it? :rotfl: I guess it's hard for me to take myself seriously, let alone Justin (who's still very boy-band in my mind).

This might be my last post for a few days. We leave for Cleveland tomorrow. It's shaping up to be a packed weekend; somehow we're now committed to seeing a youth soccer team play on Saturday afternoon. So much for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But we've got our restaurant reservations all set for Saturday night, and that's the only thing I really care about. Food. :lovestruc (Y'all can think of it as pre-race fueling if you prefer, but it's really about the food for me.)

Good Mornin' Lean Meaners!
Debra...Yep, just like the Jeffersons. I thought of that when I wrote it the first time. In fact, I sang the song in my head. I agree with the correlations between healthy eating and socio-economic status. Our neighborhood grocer just remodeled the inside of their store to be more green, organic, and geared toward a healthier lifestyle. I love it and I can find alot of great new items, but I agree with Beth in that's it's getting so expensive to eat healthy (or really to eat anything). We go through 7+ gallons of milk a week.:scared1: We shop as healthy as we can and we're getting a great deal less food that fits within the "budget". You're very sweet, but no credit was needed for the pancakes.:) Good luck this weekend.
Beth...see above and "hi"
Lisa...Good morning! I know you're around here somewhere.
Stacie...Good luck in your run this weekend!
Vic, Shan, Amy, Bill, Panda, Connie, Maria and anyone else....

I'm off to an awards ceremony for DS and grocery shopping. Only one more week of school.:cheer2: :cheer2: I love having the kids home for summer!
Have a great day!

I am going to unfortunately defer the personal comments again. I only have one to make and that is Debra is correct, muscular legs and beautiful rounded shoulders are where it's at baby. Oh and one more "sexyback" :lmao: :lmao: :rotfl2: :lmao: :lmao:

So, in this month's Fitness magazine, there is a section called You Can Do It. It has lots of good info but what I found most interesting is their eating plan and the things contained in it. It has options for eating out too which is nice if you get stuck. Here is what I have tried so far and love:
Breakfast: Peanut Butter and Banana smoothie (actually I ate this for lunch) and Blueberry and Toasted Almond Muesli which was really good too. There is also a Black Bean Breakfast Burrito, and some yogurt or cottage cheese selections. Each one is about 300 calories.

Lunch: About 400 calories. I have not tried anything on this but there is a ceasar turkey wrap, spinach salat with strawberries, balsamic tuna salad sandwich and a marinated garden Lentil Salad pita that looks really good.

Dinner: About 500 calories each. I did the Grilled chicken sausage with cucumber salad last night and it was really good. Filling too. There is lemon basil pasta with summer squash, two chees and artichoke flat bread pizza with garden salad, barbecue salmon with herbed couscous and asparagus and others.

Then they give you snack options for about 150 calories which include a peppermint patty, apple and cheese, berries and whipped cream, cheese and crackers and others. There is even a recipe for a 150 calorie cocktail.

Being that this is the Lean Mean thread, I thought some of you would enjoy this information and maybe go buy the magazine so you can try some of the recipes too. I am trying to fit some of this in as I feel it will help me make better choices (especially the snacks) and get my fruits/veggies, fiber and protein during the day that I need.

Have a Lean Mean day everyone and, okay, who did the test????

Yeah, baby! :thumbsup2  :dance3:

Mike's Place

Got in 50 minutes of swimming, 1850 yards total...I think the guy I'm taking lessons from is trying to kill me...we did a little slice of heaven called "hypoxia training" last night at the lesson, and then he gave me this ridiculous workout that I did today :scared1:

300 yard warm up
750 yards composed of 15 reps @ 50 yards, 1:15 allowed for the swim and rest each rep
100 yard easy cool down
500 yards composed of 5 repa @ 100 yards, 2:30 allowed for swim and rest each rep
200 yard cool down

Followed by a 35 minute "run". Run is in quotes since I am so tired from the swim, that it is being charitable to call what I just did a run...

Mike I have heard that the reason they have the swim first in a tri is that if they had it last a lot of the contestants would need rescuing.

Sounds like you are really getting strong. Go Mike!!!!!

Sorry I haven't had much time for visiting but it's been busy for me here lately. Still love y'all though.

Walking Panda:hippie:

Dave:

I felt like I needed rescuing!!! I can breathe easy underwater with a tank on my back...when you have to be on TOP of the water to breathe...not so much!

For those of you with a sarcastis sense of humor...thought you might enjoy this. I recieved it from a friend on e-mail... Hopefully this does not offend anyone! :goodvibes

AMAZINGLY SIMPLE HOME REMEDIES
1. Avoid cutting yourself when slicing vegetables by getting someone else to hold the vegetables while you chop.
2. Avoid arguments with the females about lifting the toilet seat by using the sink.
3. For high blood pressure sufferers ~ simply cut yourself and bleed for a few minutes, thus reducing the pressure on your veins. Remember to use
a timer.
4. A mousetrap placed on top of your alarm clock will prevent you from rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze button.
5. If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of laxatives. Then you'll be afraid to cough.
6. You only need two tools in life - wd-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the wd-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct
tape.
7. If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Some people are like slinkies - not really good for anything but they bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs.

Lisa...I haven't done the test yet... I hoping Monday night!

Deb...You are doing a race this weekend right??? Hope you and DOOD have fun!!!

So..Since this is the LEAN, Mean Thread... I'm not going tell y'all that I had a bacon egg and cheese biscuit from McDonald's this morning! I did eat Honey Nut Cheerios for lunch though... Does that make up for it?

I have a 5K on tap for this weekend. Looks to be pretty small. It's to help out a local middle school. When I called they said there was only 50 folks signed up for it... Should be fun though. Hope the legs don't scream too much at me since it will be exactly two weeks since the Minnie and no training/workouts since!

Hope everyone has a super duper weekend!!!
Stacie

Stacie: Love the tips......only if I can get the family on board!:lmao: Good luck with your race......let us know how it goes!

**Just wanted to tell everyone how much I love this thread. It's a small little WISH family, with such great encouragement! I don't have much time anymore to dis, but I do make the attempt every day to check on all of you on this thread. I don't venture 'out' of here much anymore, but I do appreciate how 'connected' you all are here! Thank you each and every one of you!!!!

Hi, folks. I've been out of touch for a while but I think I'm getting my groove back. I've been reading backwards through the forum trying to catch up with a little of what I've been missing.

Debra, thanks so much for putting together all the topical links -- it's making catching up a lot easier. Now, could you please go do that to the 6-7 other threads I normally try to read? :rotfl:

Seriously, thanks a lot. Hopefully I'll be a more responsible WISHer from now on!

2:30:00 on the bike...43.6 miles...not as far as I would have liked in that time, but the wind was brutal, gusting up to 30 mph...

Have a beautiful weekend meaners!!!!
