A question for those of you who have travelled outside the country while pregnant. My ob/gyn suggested that I purchase travel medical insurance to cover the baby in case I go into premature labour. I have not been able to find a company that will insure an unborn child. Have any of you ever done this and if so, which company did you use?? Help!!!

I really do not know but I would look at your current insurance and see if it could be modified to cover out of network care. Most infants are covered under your pollicy as soon as they are born so the issue is makig sure you are covered at flordia hospitals. My DS was born very early and had he come two weeks later we would have been out of state on vacation so do be sure to get this taken care of before you go.

I would check with your out of country insurers or your credit card company if you have a gold credit card. You also want to know what the $$ limits of coverage is and specifically if they cover premature births and if so at what week will they no longer provide coverage.

In 1996 my DW and I went to San Francisco when she was 25 weeks. I was told at that time that coverage existed provided travel didn't occur during third trimester. While in San Francisco my wife experienced some bleeding which resulted in admission and an overnight stay in a high risk pregnancy unit. My gold credit card actually covered all expenses as I had paid for the trip with it. I was sent a copy of the bill, something in the range of $5000-$7000 for the 20 or so hours we were there. The facility, care and treatment was exceptional.

If a baby had been born there I would think the costs of care and treatment of a 25 week preemie would outstrip any limits on insurance coverage. It is not a scenario I care to think about.

Unfortunately our Canadian Health Plan only covers us in Canada. We have to purchase additional travel medical when going out of the country (unless you have a private plan). Unfortunately no one I called will cover in our situation. Anyone else have any thoughts?

We purchased the insurance that Disney offers, but I called the company directly and asked them some questions. It seems they would cover costs that related to the baby being born early, but it was pretty vague about conditions while in utero.

They did not cover things to 'manage a difficult pregnancy' which seemed to be like dr rest orders, preeclempsia, etc. I could not seem to get an answer out of them about preterm labor (which I am prone to)....all they kept saying was it would be covered if you "were hospitalized for a medical condition".......so vague.

Good luck

Have you tried asking this on the Canada board? Seems you'd be more likely to find someone who has been in the same situation.
