Dh is a computer consultant that works directly with customers. For the last thirteen years he has had a beard. He keeps it very neatly trimmed at all times and it has never posed a problem. He is however attempting to leave the company and will be in the process of interviewing soon. He mentioned he may have to shave the beard off but is afraid his skin will be much lighter and he will break out from the irritation of shaving for the first time in many years. Anyone have experience with this? He is blond haired, blue eyed with a reddish beard. He looks great but is afraid it may hurt his prospects. His skin is extremely sensitive so the beard has been great.

I have never heard of that. I know a lot of men in the professional industry who have nicely shaped beards. My adopted brother who is in his late 40s is one of the most successful people I know and he has always had a beard. He deals with very important people on a daily basis. I don't think as long as it is trimmed and nice looking it should make a difference.....

I am not in human resources. However, if I was in that area I would have no problems with hiring someone that has a neatly trimmed beard. My husband has had a beard for years. I won't let him shave it off. He looks younger then me without a beard. ;)

he has had it for years..he is a designer on combat systems .....our son is a senior systems analyst with a large firm too and he has a very nice trimmed beard....

I don't have a problem with any man who has a beard as long as he isn't an OB/GYN. I mean, come on... he's looking at it all day, so he wants to emulate it on his face. Eww. Any other man can be completely sexy and attractive with a beard, except in that profession. ;)

OTOH, it does hurt a mans chances of getting a job with my company. If it comes down to two equally qualified people and one has a beard, he won't be the one getting the job. It is one of the CEO's pet peeves for some reason.

shave man to the rescue!

Well, if he DOES decide to shave it off, I STRONGLY suggest he use a sensitive skin shaving GEL (not the foam stuff), and afterwards use something gentle on the skin for an aftershave. I have sensitive skin and I use Nivia Aftershave. It's not scented, has no dyes or other colors and helps sooth after shaving. Hoped i helped some!

My DH has always had a beard .....I have never seen him without a beard!!! He keeps it very trim, tho.:D

I don't have anything against beards, but I have to agree with your husband that it may hurt his prospects while out looking for a job. I'd definitely shave it off while interviewing, then grow it back after I landed my job. I also agree with the other poster who said to use shaving gel for sensitive skin, and make sure to shave a few weeks before he's out there applying and interviewing.

Good Luck! :D

I don't like beards, but I would think it would be ok to leave a neatly trimmed beard if his skin is that sensitive. I bet Snoopy would be able to give you some pointers on this since she does some hiring.:)
