They go live at 4pm EST and I can't wait! Grazer and her cub, Chunk, and the 909's and 910 have been spotted earlier this month. Will we see a return of Otis this year?

A gentle reminder that these are wild bears and while watching you may see things that may be upsetting (two happened last year). It's okay to turn it off, walk away, call a friend to talk, etc. Nature is beautiful, fun and wonderful but it can also be tough and heartbreaking.

Bear sighting already

Oh, Katmai! I was there many years ago. We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into! We wanted to see the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes and knew nothing about the bears. This was before we had the internet. We had to have the mandatory "bear scare" lecture from a park ranger before we were allowed to go anywhere. We were so nervous walking around with our toddler, knowing that a bear/bears could be right around the corner. We could usually see at least a dozen bears from the lodge all the time.
This was one of the coolest vacations ever.

Just went to the sight and looking at 4:30AM sky is surreal.

If you don’t live in the north, it can seem that way. We’re considerably south of Alaska but have similar patterns of seasonal daylight hours. Right now it’s full light here by 5:00 am and dusky around midnight. Tomorrow is the “longest” day of the year; just before the solstice. Then the days start getting shorter again and we certainly pay the price in the winter when the sun doesn’t rise until after 9:00 am and it’s completely dark by 4:00 pm. Personally, I find it amazing when we travel closer to the equator where the days and nights are almost always the same length. :goodvibes
