are there any beaches near aulani that are worth checking out? Drove to north shore yesterday but wasn't sure if there is anything closer that we should go see

Have you been to the turtle beach right next to Aulani? You get to it through the luau parking lot. It's not that exciting in terms of the beach itself, although it is perfectly fine and has a nice view up the coastline that you don't get from the Aulani beach. The draw is the sea turtles who live there.

Pokai Bay was decent when I went, it was good for stand up paddle boards when I went. I haven't gone yet, but I hear good things about the snorkeling at Electric beach and shells at Tracks (sometimes considered a questionable area, but I know people who really like it there, too. I've never had trouble anywhere on the island... As with any other place, don't plan on leaving valuables in your car/on the beach)

All of those would be closer than a drive to the north shore.

Ewa beach just southeast of Kapolei is decent. It is a little rocky in areas but still swimmable. The waves can get big in the winter so use caution with little kids. Here is a link from You Tube with a little overview including directions.
