Looking to leave Orlando and head to the beach for the day. Any suggestions? We typically visit Clearwater but I didn't want to drive that far this time.
Your only other option would be to head to the East Coast.. you can do Daytona which might be about an hour's drive.. I think that would be the closest beach for you.
I really like Cocoa Beach ~ it's about an hour 15 minutes from WDW or 45 minutes for the airport. The pier is great & so is Ron Jon's Surf Shop. We really enjoy the beach there and if you are lucky you may see the Disney ship leaving the channel to your left
I have a similar question, what would be better Cocoa Beach or New Smyrna? Our group is six people and range in age from active 60's to 5. Last year we did Daytona Beach.
The east coast beaches are closer than the gulf coast. But be aware that the water conditions are very different. The gulf beaches don't have a lot of waves and have very gradual drop offs. They are great for kids or not so great swimmers. The east coast beaches are the opposite. Drop offs can be steep, surf is often rough. I always had trouble getting out of the water, back onto the beach. DH likes the east coast, I hate it. After several trips to Florida's east coast, we now go to the gulf coast.
one more thing you need to watch out for on the east coast - they have had alot of riptides this year - if the warning are out - and definitely go look for the warning before you get near the water. Don't go in the ocean if the life guard warning say not too.

I can tell you that New Smyrna has the most shark attacks in all of Fl..if that will help you decide... I haven't been there in years, I live near Ft Myers Beach. I am on the Gulf Coast. My sister lives on the East Coast, near Flagler Beach.. so I don't really go to many others that much anymore. I think from listening to the news about the sharks (several years in a row), I would go with Cocoa
We just got back from our trip and we spent one day at Cocoa Beach. I liked the Pier, we had lunch in a restauraunt there and it was good. There is also restrooms where you can change clothes etc.. The water was great and the waves were fun to play in. There were lounge chairs & umberellas to rent and you can rent boogie boards or buy them cheap at Ron Jons Surf shop near by.
The only thing I didn't like was the seaweed or whatever it was all over the beach. It makes the beach look dirty and it is stickery to walk on. Other than that we has a great time there.boat: :sunny
