We are presently visiting HHI and they going through an extensive beach rehab that closes major portions of the beach at any one time. Presently it has extended passed the Port Royal Plantation area and will continue to the area past Pope Ave. where the Marriott Gande Ocean is. That means that sometime in the next couple of weeks the area in front of the DVC/HHI beach house will be closed.

That's interesting! So it sounds like it's the entire island? I wonder why, whether it's just a regularly scheduled rehab or if something happened to necessitate this.

Forgive my ignoarnce, but how do you rehab a beach? :confused3
If possible, I would love an description of what they are doing. It sounds interesting.

What they are doing is providing elevation markers along the beach. Then they dredge an area approx.50 -80 ft wide and pile the sand up in mounds near the waters edge. Off shore they have a rig that pumps through pipes sand that will fill these dredged areas. They then grade the entire area making a much wider beach area during high tide. Unfortunately it is a great inconvenience if you are on vacation and enjoy being on the beach.

Thank-you for the response...I had no idea they did that kind of thing. Who do you think pays for that kind of operation?

What is the quality of the new sand? They did this on Miami Beach about 30 years ago and the new sand was like broken glass. Not pleasant to walk on. Do you think it will affect the nice tidal pools?

They do this beach renourishment process every few years, due to erosion (one side of the island is losing sand, the other side is gaining). At least it goes pretty quick.

The good news: 278 is about ready to be re-opened with the new lanes finally finished! :cloud9:
