Beach near St Pete Help

Just found out I may have to go down to St Petersburg FL for a weekend in September, and am thinking of turning it into a mini-beach vacation. (Yes, I know how close Disney is - but that's not in the cards).

I've never been. Does anyone know anything about the beaches in and around St Petersburg? My idea of the perfect beach town is something low key, not overflowing with high-rises or traffic. A place with easy walking to a beach and a local colorful restaurant where I can get fried seafood. Mellow. Is there anything like that near St Pete?

Oh, and while that is my ideal beach town, I've love to hear any ideas or recommendations of places you guys enjoy in the area.

My DD went there for a dance camp a few years back. I remember her saying it was a really pretty beach. That's about all I can tell you. Mostly bumping here so you can get more information from more educated DISers.

I live in Tampa, but my best friend and I just stayed here this past weekend.

We found it to be very relaxing and the beach was beautiful.

As for seafood, one night we walked down to Crabby Bill's(about 1 block away). The food was pretty good.

We like the Don Cesar. But of course, that is because we are Loews Platinum from our stays at Universal, so we get a guaranteed upgrade to a suite.

But it is a beautiful place with a gorgeous beach.
