Two Questions about the BC - one does it have a counter service like they offer at the Values & Moderates?

Also before I book, friends of ours stayed at the Beach Club (and loved it...but) their whole family got swimmers itch from the pool (the doctor @ Disney confimed) he said it was from the ducks that also swim in the pool at the Beach Club. Does anybody know if this is a common problem? I'd hate to spend that kind of money and end up with a rash - like their whole family did.

Counter service is at the Marketplace which is limited but decent sandwich fare. There is also a "store" where a family could buy bread PB&J to make their own sandwiches.

However, there is Beaches & Cream, Hurricane Hanna's, and the entire BW area including a pizza window at Spoodles. In addition, one could order appetizers at the Crew's Cup Lounge at YC.

I have never received swimmers itch from SAB. Gosh, I never even heard of it. Do you know what causes it and if it can be prevented?

The Beach Club is our favorite resort and we always go swiming and I can honestly say we've never had a problem.

As far as counter service there is Hurricane Hannahs at the pool and the Beach Club Marketplace (located in the gift shop) has great sandwiches, soups and salads and a breakfast menu. You can check out the menu's here:

The doctor told them it was from the ducks swimming in the pool (because they are dirty, basically) their whole family missed a whole day while they waited for the doctor and then game them all a cream to use - they were totally discussed as you can image. Besides that, they did love the resort - I was just wondering if this was common occurance here.

As for the food - so besides Cape May Cafe - they don't offer counter service restaurants that would sell waffles, pancakes, etc?

When I was at the Yacht Club in June, I did notice that they ducks just hung out in the pool. I never even thought that one could get sick from that, though....

We have stayed at the BC or BCV 3 times so far for a total of 24 days and maybe once or twice we did see a couple of ducks in the pool. I tend to think they do not go in the pool during the hot days when the pool is very active, however as someone else said there are ducks that do "hang" around the pool area so I guess unfortunately, it is only natural that they do sometimes go in the water. I have to say I was a little uneasy when we saw them in the water myself. We were not swimming at the time. I have not ever heard about this rash that your friends got, however. How unfortunate! I can imagine how uncomfortable and uneasy it made them. We are headed to SAB next month and I truly would hate to have to deal with that. Thanks for posting. I would be interested to hear if anyone has experienced this reaction.

It possible to find ducks in pretty much any WDW pool. The pools at Disney are generally not sterile concrete fenced in areas and often have landscaping around them. Ducks are quite at home nesting near Disney pools and occasionally taking a dip there.

They have the yacht club galley that offers meals that are sit down but fast and not that expensive to me. We love it.

We have came back with swimmers ear from SAB 3 times now but that's the nature of the beast. The ducks do swim in the water. We saw them many many times. There was a mommy dick with 5 ducklings 2 weeks ago. Everyone enjoyed watching them swim around the rock area by the hot tub...they have a nest there.

Correct. No counter service for something like waffles or pancakes.

One poster mentioned Yacht Club Galley for breakfast, which is good. It's a similar breakfast buffet as Cape May but without the characters so it's cheaper. Another sit down restaurant for waffles/pancakes would be Spoodles.

You could order room service if your family wants waffles/pancakes but do not want to sit in a restaurant.

The counter service type of food is pastries, egg sandwiches, bagels or yogurt.

The Boardwalk Bakery is nearby as well, but still no waffles/pancakes. They mainly serve egg sandwiches and pastries.

We stay at the Yacht Club every year, although this year we're staying at the Beach Club (it was a little less expensive)

I love staying there because it's in conveniently located and there's always something to do. The only problem I have with the hotels is, in my opinion, the lack of dining options, there's nothing really there when you want a quick bite (especially later in the evening..which is usually when I want something).

Hurricane Hannah's is good, but is usually closed when I want something..plus you have to walk either around or thru the pool to get to it.

Beaches & Cream is very good, but is virtually always crowded and can get pretty expensive

As for the snack bar in the BC gift shop..there's never anything there that interests me (I will never forget the nasty egg sandwich I had one morning)

Other than that there's just the restaurants or you have to take the boat or walk across to the boardwalk

I just wish there was a place like Roaring Fork Snacks at WL..quick, easy, and right there with a good selection of things to pick from..



As for the ducks..you can't escape them, they're everywhere on Disney property and it's only natural that they end up around and even in the pools. It's unfortunate that your friend's family had a problem with the ducks in the pool, but personally I've never had any problems because of it..

I can't confirm that it's a common problem, but I can tell you when we were there in June, there were *tons* of ducks in the pool. They were mainly congregated in the very shallow area, and I noticed them mainly in the evenings and early mornings, when the pool was not getting much (if any) use. I did think that it was kind of gross and wondered what Disney did to clean up any of their mess, then decided that I just needed to block it out of my mind....

I thought swimmers itch came from the chlorine in the water and your reaction or not to it.

The whole swimmers itch topic is kind of gross because...if a pool is well maintained and chlorinated, the parasites that cause "swimmers itch" cannot live. The parasites that cause this problem can be carried by ducks, but not in the pool (again, if it's appropriately chlorinated).

Swimmers itch can be picked up in lakes,ponds and the ocean. Do you know if your friends waded through the lake by the Beach Club? When present, the larvae actually are more likely to be present in shallow water.

Regardless, swimmers itch is definitely unpleasant and I thank you for posting the warning. While I'm not nervous about the pool, I'll definitely avoid wading/walking ankle deep in the lake!!!

Well I just did some research.

It's not the ducks per se... it's SNAILS that cause this. If the ducks get the "Wrong" kind of "food" apparently this can occur.

Now conisdering that as far as I can tell 99.9% of Disney Ducks pretty much live off of handouts from humans I don't think I will waste much time worrying about the ducks eating the wrong snails. (I figure if some of those ducks had to go find food in the wild they would STARVE LOL!)

The article also says it takes a 'convergence' of factors for this occur.

Having gone swimming in a LOT of Disney pools this is not a concern IMHO.

Nearby is an important word here.... I found the Boardwalk to be quite a walk from the Yacht Club, after winding your way through the long corridors of the resort and then walking halfway around the lake in the middle of August, we decided that the Boardwalk was too far to go to pick up something "quick" for breakfast.....

I did find a treatment for swimmer's itch:

Treatment may not be necessary when there are only a few itching spots. An antihistaminic or mild corticosteroid cream purchased over the counter in pharmacies can be beneficial. If the initial itching is severe, then scratching can cause abrasions and skin infections may develop. If the symptoms persist for longer than 3 days, a dermatologist should be seen. Prescription medications may help reduce the itching.

I have eaten at B&C, well dessert. My youngest DS had the kitchen sink. It's a meal in itself.
