I had a friend on VMK, his name is <name removed> he tried to get my username and password from me since i am very rich. I was in his room so i deleted him off my friends list and quickly removed any teleporters that connect our rooms. He reached one of my rooms before i could take out the teleporter and so I quickly booted him. if you ever find him on vmk, press the ignore button so that he does not try to steal your stuff.

I think the name being removed thing is stupid, sorry but if there are people scamming others and causing trouble, people should be informed of who they are so they can be avoided to help keep another innocent person from being scammed.

So I might go on later, try to make a trade, and get scammed by this same person, but it could have been avoided if I knew their name and knew to avoid them at all costs.

Yeah, except sometimes people make up stuff about others that isn't true (not saying the original poster is doing this, of course). I would want my name taken out if someone was slandering me in a thread and I wasn't around to defend myself.

Sorry, but we don't allow flaming of others on DIS.

Scammers can change their name as quickly as they can create a new account anyway. Knowing how people try to scam and being careful is the best way to stay safe.

If we allowed names, what would stop someone who may be angry with you from posting your name in public as a scammer?

You are always welcome to PM other members, but public accusations with names can't be allowed.

The board could permit this, since there are broad protections from libel claims against Internet forum providers, but there are many reasons why a board would not want to permit it, and they are providing us with a free forum that we all enjoy using, so rules is rules.

A. If someone on a message board was saying that about me, I wouldnt care. Its the internet. What people say and think about me on it, mean nothing. And that is a big problem with the world today.

B. SOOOOOOOOOO many scams would be avoided if names were allowed. They are fake names used by someone on an internet game that is not even searchable! Theyre not giving away personal information of any type.

So whatever, we can let fellow DIS members continue to be scammed and ripped off because of a rule that makes no sense. It is not SLANDER, and it is not FLAMING. Its helping fellow members of DIS and other players of VMK out by simply saying, Hey, thisdude is scamming people, so watch out. FLAMING would be talking trash and making fun of someone, Slander would mean if it is something in the REAL WORLD.

Sorry, but myself, and a few friends have been scammed way too many times, and when there is a chance for that to be avoided very simply, and its not allowed, its annoying.

ZOMG! Of course you wouldn't care because I just matched you to HIM!

HOW DARE YOU SIT HERE AND LET THIS HAPPEN????

WE ALL TRUSTED YOU!!!

to think I just gave you a 5 star bat because I felt sorry for you only to find out you just conned another one away from <name removed>.

well I reported you and VMK reads these boards so you will get yours!!

this is why thats not allowed. I just made that up, but I could have turned everyone on these boards against you to the point that you wouldnt be able to trade anything here or on any other board because half the people here are also on the others. And all because maybe I had a believable story, or enough friends to make it work.

For the record there is not a single VMK board that I am aware of that would let you post a persons name for this, its not unique to the DISboards.

Actually I know of a few VMK boards that dont really care.

And as I posted an example:
"Hey, thisdude is scamming people, so watch out."

If people kept it simple, and not out of control like your example, there would be no problem. And scams would be avoided.

Yes, I agree with you, but the fact is, not everyone will keep it simple. There is just to much risk that someone could frame someone somehow. Imagine if it was you, and then no one would trade with you. Wouldn't you be mad? I had an experience very similar to this, and I was livid. As I steded before, there is just to muc risk, and people could become terribly upset over something like that, to the point of quitting vmk.

In conclusion, you have to look at the big picture when thinking of removing names from posts.

I think you totally missed the point

but to your point, what boards do you think permit it? I can say for sure the biggest ones do not. I see it corrected all the time. Feel free to name them.

VMK knobs is one that comes to mind. As well as VMK Dark Side. And I wont link to it because Im sure there are rules here that dont even allow linking to offsite boards and forums.

What Im saying is, if its THAT big of a problem, then the boards should have a rule. If you are spreading rumors, or telling lies about other VMK Members, you are banned. And to ONLY post a members name if they are 100% sure a known scammer.

Maybe you should get scammed and ripped off a few times like other people have, to really understand what people have to deal with.

Its like a person will go, and get scammed. And it would be by the same person that was complained about on here. But that person that got scammed didnt know, because they didnt know their name since it wasnt listed here. So because of that, they lost some of their rare hard earned items.

Or, list a name, then when in a trade, or if it seems like it might be scam, youll remember OH! its thisdude, someone else complained about them scamming, and this seems like it might be what theyre trying to do to me too! SCAM, AVOIDED.

Think about it, with a simple rule change, we can help fight what alot of people are having to deal with, and complaining about. And help keep a HUGE problem on VMK down to a minimum. Basically, not having their names listed on here, is PROTECTING SCAMMERS. Because scammers DO read these forums, and their thinking is probably just

"HEY! I can scam as many people as I want and get away with it, because nobody lists my name and theyll never know!"

Because VMK RARELY ever actually does something about scammers. So if theyre not, someone else should.

seriously not being a wise guy but maybe you should read the rules. Links are permitted to sites that don't contain the information you are looking for on this site.

Those sites are more like small communities. I just checked forums, magic, kingdom and guide, all have the same rules in place. When you think about it, its not stopping scamming, its protecting the innocent.

You may not have seen this post because we got it stopped not to long ago. But someone came in here and accused a member of scamming that was totally OFF. I am sure many saw it before we got it under control. It was very damaging information and anyone who saw it would completely understand what we are talking about.

OK, since you skipped past my first example. how about this.

Lets say "fashizzle" got here before "CeffJat" and posted that CeffJat ripped him off? At the time fashizzle was just as respected a member as Ceffjat. Why would we believe Ceffjat over fashizzle?

to go even further - how do you prove someone lied any more than you can prove they scammed?

I actually got into a rather heated argument with a moderator over a scamming post which WAS allowed, and I thought should not have been a while back. Everyone believed the original poster because they are a "well know, respected member" - well, I thought, why is this person allowed to slam the other? And the other cannot very well defend themselves ona board which is decidedly against them. This is a case in point.

Plus: I spent 5 years moderating a card trading board. We had exactly such an example of "lying" happen which did in fact cause the accused to quit the board and sell off his collection. I came to find out later on that the so called "scammer" was absolutely in the right. And this involved real money, real business and real reputations. not virtual items.

In addition: In my opinion, even these "hey I was scammed" posts should not be allowed. there have been too many which sounded bogus to me. (such as multiple "i was scammed" threads from the same person or persons)

you may be surprised, but I agree with alot of this.

well even if we cannot post names publicly, we can still PM them and you can choose to believe if it is true or not, for me; seeing is believing.

I hope nobody was, LOL

But I do realize we totally hijacked this thread :)

I would infract us all but I have a rule about infracting myself so we are all safe :)

I do think its a good discussion in that, wether or not we agree with a rule, it can have some benefit to why it might be in place.

If you want to create a new thread RV on the topic feel free, but I think we butchered GuestDude's post enough :)

Just how does one go about attempting to get your username and password? Sounds like a pretty weak move, even for a scammer.

I just want to say that while I understand why no one should post the names on the board and agree with all the reasons...I also believe most of those scammed could have avoided it if they had paid more attention to the trades and some didn't buy into the trades that are to good to be true trades as well. There are so many ways to protect yourself from this stuff happening. If it has happened more then once to you then learn from those times and be more careful instead of rushing things. ;)

And back on topic of trying to scam a user name/password. I agree with steamboatpete. It is a pretty weak move to try but sadly I bet some will give it up if they think they will get something from it. Yet in the end they lose it all.:sad2:
