My sons are having a birthday party this weekend for their 11th birthday. I was going to have them do some "Minute to Win it" games. What can I have for prizes for the winning team(s)? One friend is allergic to peanuts, so that rules out a lot of candy. Any other things that 5th grade boys would like that doesn't cost much? Also, should I do party favor bags, or are they too old for that?

Thanks for any advice! :)

Hi - I have 11-year-old twin boys too! We had a Minute to Win it themed party a couple years ago, so they were a bit younger, but I can share what we did for prizes.

One of our games was a small lego set (I had picked up several of the same set after Christmas for 50% off in the stocking stuffer section at Target) - the winner was the one who put it together fastest correctly. So they all were able to take that lego set home as a party favor.

For other prizes we used pokemon cards, GoGos (not sure if they are still popular) other small Lego sets, and a few items from the dollar store (water bottles, flashlights)

Have fun!

I would "stop" the madness of goody bags!

I do like your idea of minute-to win it games

I like your idea for prizes-being food based: what about bags of microwave popcorn? Don't know if it is nut-free, (I.e. Is there peanut oil in it).

We usually try to have nut-free candy at Halloween: so, some options might be:skittles, junior mints, sugar babies and tootsie rolls are some that come to mind. I check every year before I purchase candy just to make sure they are still nut-free. Laffy-taffy might be another one that is nut free, milk duds might be nut-free too!

My DD is turning 11 and we are having her party this weekend. She is having her 3 best friends over. She is basically planning it herself, she got some games for Christmas she wants to play then pizza and cake. She basically wanted bags filled with candy for her goody bags because everything else is "babyish". I told her no, no goody bags. I cringe when my kids bring home bags of candy. I know it's a party but I love when kids don't get goody bags I mean they have just been at a party and had a bunch of junk there. We give goody bags for 10 years then no more I feel like we just throw the money down the drain when we do. The stuff they have to fill them is cheap garbage. One of my other DD bday is before Christmas she turned 9. For her goody bags I bought them all littlest pet shops and at the party they made cookies, used Christmas cookie cutters and then decorated them and each took a bag of cookies home, they all loved that.

How about small packs of baseball or football cards? Fruit roll ups, sports team pencils and erasers, mini lego sets, mini footballs, water bottles? I wouldn't bother with goodie bags at this age. Have fun!

pen light flash lights, cheap ear buds, yo-yo, silly putty, silly string

For DS's bday we did vintage comic books and finger lights for reading them in bed. Got mine on ebay super cheap but any comic book store should have bunches for under $1 ea. Finger lights 40pk cheap on Amazon but dollar stores have 4packs. Full size flashlights would be cool too. Those were our goody bags along with candy they got by unrolling a beachball-size ball of candy wrapped in saran wrap. :) prizes for games from Hobby Lobby and Walmart/Target: glider airplanes, water bottles, Nerf football, etc.

In the past I have gotten gift cards from local yogurt/ice cream places. About $2 or $3 a piece and they can go and that usually covers the cost of a child size cone.

That party a few years ago. We didn't have teams, and I did keep track of who won which event but we didn't have a winner. What I did for a goodie bag was wrote up instructions for a few of the games. I gave them each a timer (from the Dollar Tree) and the materials they would need to do the challenges at home in a large brown grocery bag. Some we did at the party and some we did not. Clips from our party are on YouTube under the same user name if you want some game ideas. Have fun!

We did minute to win it games for my DS 9yr old party. It was a slumber party and I gave headlamp flashlights. I was able to find them at Target for about $5. The boys loved them!

we have 12 year old twin boys! And for their bday prizes, we will give out $5 gift cards to diff fast food places. I love handing out Goody Bags and will include a juice pouch, a full size candy bar, a small can of pringles and usually a whoopie cushion (what boy doesn't love fart noises...lol).
