BCV purchase/point rental advice, please...

I am anticipating that my wife and I are probably going to purchase 150-200 pts at BCV (supposedly we have price protection til July 1 at current rate). My first question relates to the relative ease/difficulty of "renting" out my first years points-- if I can expect to have little trouble renting those points (at $10 or possibly $9) then it would be easier for me to justify buying a higher number of points.

Secondly but related to the above, regarding use year-- they are currently primarily selling February but apparently don't mind selling any of the 8 use years. What scenario might make it easiest to rent my points-- buying February, banking them, then renting; purchasing a later use year (April, June, or even later) and not banking. I don't know the intricacies of the DVC well enough to strategize on my own, so I'm hoping someone can advise me. Thanks in advance.

Mike

I have not rented but many have had success on the rent trade board here. There are risks involved -- you basically have to trust who you are renting to and vice versa and you can always face the potential issue of what happens if the renter needs to cancel, and possibly leave you holding points you won't be able to rent to anyone else. You also have to know what you are doing -- for example it is very helpful to have a written agreement covering crucial points like time and method of payment, impact of cancellation. The usual rental situation is for you to make the reservation in the guest's name and make arrangements for them to pay you and you send them the confirmation in thier name. To do that, what use year you have or whether points are banked or unbanked is irrelevant. The only time there would be an issue is if you were going to actually transfer points to another member (and then that member make his own reservation); you can only transfer current points not banked ones -- but again if you make the ressie using your points for the guest that does not count as an actual transfer and your use year makes no difference. I would just get the February use year if you buy.

I rented points to someone last year when my in-laws cancelled 30 days (not 31!) in advance of going to WDW with us. It was painless. Given the popularity of BCV you should have no problem renting out points at $10 each.

Your use year depends on when you vacation most. If it's around Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year's then the February UY will not work for you. If you need to cancel your trip you may not have enough time to bank your points or even reschedule. If you usually vacation in the summer, then February will be perfect :).

When I first contacted DVC several weeks ago, my guide advised me of the pending price increase but nevertheless told me that having started my inquiry at this time, I would be "protected" until July 1. In case I had misunderstood, I called earlier this week wondering if I needed to go ahead and execute some paperwork or send in a deposit so I asked "WHAT do I need to make sure I do by WHEN in order to make sure I avoid the price increase"-- the gist of his answer was that I didn't need to do anything, that I did have to July 1st-- that he would simply have to send in a proposal (or something to that effect) by that day and that I would be OK.

I hope he's right. We visited our guide in early May,he told us to wait till NEAR the end of MAY then call him to start the paperwork and leave a deposit on my CC. He never said a word about price protection till July simply because I had made an inquiry. Good luck and let us know if they honor the old price after May 31st.

Hi,

I'm from Quebec, Canada and went on the DVC visit last october. Last week, I was told about the upcoming increase. I then called the representative I met and told him I was coming on july 6th. He answered that after july 1st he MUST charge 80$ but until july 1st we can make arrangements at 75$

I was told by my guide that as I was registered for potential purchase during May - I was protected at the $75 level for my upocoming purchase in late June. I didn't discuss a July 1st date. I did call back this last week to make sure I didn't need to put down a deposit or start the paperwork. I was assured that this was not necessary and the price was $75 if my purchase time was still in late June.

I first contacted DVC in early May and was told the same thing as stated above. She said as long as I made a decision and started the process before July 1 that I would receive the $75 per point rate. I plan to do that if all works out.

I was just looking through this thread again and noted a distinction. It seems that those who received a price-lock made first contact in May.

So, It may be that you had to make first contact with DVC in the right period of time. Also, those existing members looking for an add-on may not get the same offer (KNWVIKING?).

I gave my okay for the add on today June 1st. My guide told me I have till 30 days from today to send in my down payment. I am paying 75 dollars a point......

I am also in that situation (locked in thru July 1). I called about May 17 and was assigned a Guide who left one phone message and then took off on vacation until June 14! LOL! He left the name of a co-worker I could talk to, but I didn't "click" with him, and (as far as I know) not until May 29 when I asked to talk to a third person did I get officially locked in.

I suspect our guide is OK (still haven't talked to him) but I *really* have to wonder about the DVC person who assigned him to me, esp since I specifically said I was interested in reaching a decision before the price went up.
