Where I come from, BBQ has nothing to do with sauce or rub. BBQ is low, slow cooking for a relatively long period of time with wood/smoke. Grilling is direct, moderate-to-high heat which takes a relatively short period of time.

Now see, we would consider that "smoked" not "bbq". Funny how different it is in different parts of the country.
If there is no sauce--we call it "grilled".
