How do they set up things in the back yard without the houseguests knowing? For example, the Sheryl Crow stage, the competition settings, etc. How do the keep it from them until its actually time?

I believe the shades are drawn from the outside and the door is locked.

It's called a lockdown. sometimes they have them outside and sometimes inside.
