Bay Lake Tower Balcony and Children

I know many parents have concerns over the balconies and their children going over. I took a few photos of my son, who is 4'8", at the railing for perspective to help them decide if they should take extra precautions or even try another resort. I also had him stand on the outdoor chair for those whose kids are climbers. (Don't worry, he's 13 and I was right behind him. )
In addition, there are two locks on the door. They are fairly simple locks, though. And the door is difficult to slide. I did pull my back opening it one morning.

We have always had a strict policy about our kids going out on the balcony. They aren't allowed unless they tell an adult or an adult is with them. They also know it's against the rules to stand on a chair/table, etc. We've never had a problem.

Yes very strict with my grandson going out on balcony alone. Especially with chairs and table out there for them to climb on.

going to another resort won't do anything. They all have balconies. Only way to feel safer is to get a room on ground floor.

Those balconies scare me. Look how easily a child can climb it. Balconies shouldn't have any horizontal bars for footing, in my opinion. Even without the chair, a younger child could climb to get a better view. CR only has vertical railings on the balcony, they could have gone with that and matched the other building.

The good thing about BLT balconies is the door are near impossible to open. The only person in our family of 5 that can open it is DH

I have 5 children and never once were they out on a balcony by themselves. You either leave the door locked or go out there with them!

It amazes me that anyone able to reproduce is stupid enough to think that balconies are a place for kids to play unsupervised As many have said on this thread, there's NO problem when the parent sets rules and provides even minimal proper supervision. To suggest balconies should be modified because an unsupervised or poorly supervised child might hurl himself over the railing is ridiculous!

I don't think people think that. I have seen many post of people stressing that little Johnny will sneak out on the balcony in the middle of the night, for what ever reason, and go over the railing.
My post was to inform people that, not only is the door difficult to open, but that an average sized three year old would have a hard time getting over the railing.

Our BLT balcony door was difficult to lock, and so I called maintenance to show me what I was doing wrong. (This was not the slider but the actual door off the living room in a dedicated 2 bed.) while there, the gentleman offered to place a lock on the bedroom slider that would be removed once we checked out. It completely prevented the slider from being opened.

We were still able to access that one balcony from the living room (using the fairly difficult to lock or unlock door) but the bedroom slider was locked "permanently". He said it's not something they are allowed to "offer" unless someone has expressed a concern. He also said a lot of concerns are expressed specifically in situations where kids are sleeping in rooms with balcony access and the parents may not be in the room.

I appreciate these pics! I was worried about it with our toddlers but I think we'll be good based on these pictures. Obviously will not leave unsupervised.

Thanks so much for this post. We do not allow our children on balconies without an adult either, but I am still concerned. Our children do sleep alone in one of the bedrooms in the two bedroom villa. We keep a careful watch, however we do need to sleep at night! And no matter how well behaved your children are, you cannot take the chance that this might be the one time that they disobey and go out for a look. I will be asking for the special lock.
