Batteries checked or carryon?

Where do I pack my AA batteries in carryon or checked?

I would check them, unless they are in an appliance already.

On the way to India no one questioned our extra batteries we carried on. On the way back, we had to leave our batteries there. I think each screener has a different interpetation of the rules.

I don't mind checking them, I just don't want them saying they are explosive devices...haha. just wanted to make sure I was allowed to check them
