Hi everyone, I've been here before and I'm back again. Getting ready to tackle this weight problem of mine which is really getting me down! One thing, I have no bathroom scale and have no idea what I wiegh exactly. Because before, when I went on diets I always ended up wieghing myself more than once a day hoping that something would fall off and now I'm thinking maybe it would be better to just go by how my clothes fit instead?

What do you think? Or will I, after a few weeks wonder if anything has happened and because I can't tell...fall off the wagon then?
Thanks for any opinions...now I'm off trying to find a plan that will work and keep me interested at the same time... :) .

I had the same question and ended up purchasing one. I'm glad I did, because it was a chock seeing how much I gained. When you loose weight, you notice. But when you gain, you lie to yourself. At least I do. I try to weigh myself once a week, usually end up doing this twice a week. But I do recommend you to buy one.

I think that is a personal decision. Some people swear by not being a slave to the scale, others use the scale to help keep them in check. I have a scale and I used to weigh every day, now I try to do it every couple of days, but for me I find it a useful tool.

I think it is a good idea. It helps me stay accountable. I went for years having NO IDEA what I weighed... now I know. I think it is different for everyone though. The weight does fluctuate though so don't get bogged down by that... just try to make your "official" day one day a week, same time, same amount of clothing etc. When I am OP I like to weigh every day... just being a control freak I guess! ;)

I think you should get one.

I was just reading somewhere about how checking your weight every day is a factor in maintaining a healthy weight. I'm a Librarian, so I read lots of "useless" (lol) stuff everyday at work. I can't remember where I read this...maybe the latest WW magazine???

If you listen to the WW leaders, then we should throw out the scale and rely on our weekly weigh-in. There's a lot of sense to that, but I know that without a scale, I gained more than 100 lbs. It creeps up on you. I'm a firm believer (now) in keeping an accurate scale, with BMI readings, within your home. It doesn't replace the weekly meeting, but it helps you keep on track.

I read that same thing somewhere! That by weighing yourself every day, you won't suddenly discover that around 8 pounds have crept up on you. It's much less difficult to diet for a few days if 1-2 pounds start adding on.
To the OP, I bought a scale last year and I'm very happy with it. It's a Taylor Superior-real basic, just does weight to the nearest 0.5 lbs, no BMI. I bought it at Target and it was inexpensive. What I like is that it has a BIG read-out. I'm nearsighted, yet I can read the numbers even without my glasses or contacts. Maybe I'd be better off with one that does BMI, but I'd probably be out more money, too.

Welcome Back! It's great to have you here again!

Never give up! If you fall off that wagon, get back on. You can make it with or without that scale.

There will be times that nothing does happen. Your body may stall some. You can work through that too!

That being said, everyone has offered great advice. In order to decide what works for you try thinking if you can feel successful knowing you are making healthy eating choices. Make your way to increase movement if you can. There are online sites that you can monitor your intake such as fitday.com. You could try to monitor what you have been eating and try cutting the portion so your calorie intake is reduced. You won't necessarily need to spend money on that scale then. Another thought might be to see if you can find someone/someplace with a scale that you could go to once a month. If you at least have some sort of weigh in you wouldn't necessarily need a scale in your house.

Try shifting your focus into make healthy eating choices and a lifestyle change.

Keep on keepin' on. You will make it!

Thanks everyone :) for the replies. I do have a scale, I just remember it wasn't that accurate and had shoved it deep into the bowls of our closet. Now I've pulled it out, dialed 911 and climbed on :( . It's wierd, but I had guessed to the exact pound how much I weighed and I really have gone up a lot! I also know that while I was slowly buying larger sizes, since I didn't know exactly what I weighed I kidded myself that I would go on a diet, soon. I think it I had been using the scale I would have at least stopped gaining 20 pounds ago! I think now it's best I buy a new, more accurate scale.

Thank you for the warm welcome back, and I like your idea Tiger Lily, about going someplace else that has a scale. That would keep me from obsessing and stripping then jumping on the scale multiple times per day. Since an ounce or two could depress me, I think a great product would be a scale that would be just for dieters (here comes my million dollar idea!) that just lets you know if you've lost, stayed the same, or gained anything. Then by switching a switch you could find out what you weighed. However there would be me, naked and switching that switch several times a day instead

For me, weighing every day is key. I don't obsess about doing it multiple times though, lol. I just weigh each morning, naked, right after I wake up. Dh does it too. It really helps me know how my day should go eating-wise. :thumbsup2

I use my once a week WW weigh-in as my "official" weight though.

As long as you don't obsess over it then I think a scale is a good idea. Weighing in each morning can be a problem though. If you can do it once a week it's much better for you. I personally weigh myself way too many times. First thing in the morning and then multiple times at night. I need to have some willpower over the scale like I have with Walking and Eating. No matter what you decide good luck with your plan!
