Baseball topic - Hating Steinbrenner

the bottom line is that there was a reason the NFL and the NBA adopted certain rules and regulations. Steinbrenner isn't the cause of MLB's problems. hating him and bashing him isn't going to cure MLB's ills.

Just to jump in, I can't deny that George IS very good at what he does - there were points made that other teams with a lot of money don't do nearly as well. But I also believe that what George is doing might be great for the Yankees, but in turn it is also detrimental to the ML as a whole. Can someone just take Buddy Boy for a very long walk down a short pier? :teeth:

I'd be more up for an incentive type of thing, where the player gets his money ONLY IF he performs up to a certain level. Might do wonders for some :p

Money just seems to ruin everything

It is owners like Steinbrenner who have made the league what it is today – a 6 team league. Sure money buys a championship – just don’t tell that to the New York Rangers. The thing is that it also ruins a league when there are only 6 or so teams that can be competitive. What happened to the days when players stuck it out with one maybe two teams throughout their career? I do not begrudge these guys for moving and getting all that they can get but who pays for it in the end – we do. When Tom Hicks decided to pay Alex Rodriguez $25 million a year he helped to add to the potential sports Armageddon. Why was it that Arod was not traded this year at the deadline? Simple, who the heck was going to pay the guy that much money. So Texas fans can blame him if their team continues to suck. The thing is anybody would have taken the money, Hicks and owners alike should share the blame.

I think it would priceless if, some weekend when Yankee Stadium is full for a game with a small market team, that team chose not to take the field that day. Then we'd see how valuble the Yankees are without the rest of the league.

The system under which MLB currently operates is obviously flawed. I've almost given up on the players union ever giving up a nickel to do anything for the good of the game, but I still hope that the owners, who are some of the most successful businessmen on earth would stop taking such a short-sighted approach and start thinking about what will be best for the game long term.

Under the current system, owners are operating under the honor system and unfortunately many of these men lack honer and will do what suits them well today regardless of the impact on the league.

it's a business. the fans think of it as sport, but that's not really true, is it?

That's the problem right there. Sure, it's a business, and the sport is getting lost in it. The customer is always right, they're screwing the customer up the you know what. They're lining their own pockets, not caring about the sport and it's longevity and the foundation upon which is was formed. Kind of like a lot of other things in this country, but I won't get started on that.

MLB system may be flawed.. Ok lets look at the way the other sports are run. NFL is considered to be a effecient model for running a sports lague. There is a salary cap, revunue sharing parity of schedule, biggest TV money,, ans lets see what happened... Since the salary cap was instituted players are released to meet the cap. Unless a player is a franchise player he is expendable. Players come and go and it makes you root for the team..not the for the players. There are no dominant teams. Teams are broken up right after they win the Super Bowl. Yes thee is parity.. any team can win.. I liked it better when in the 70s when the my hated teams the Cowboys , Steelers and Dolphins would win.. and my fave team the Giants were doormats... because I knew all the players and beating any of these teams was all gravy. Yes the Green Bay Packers with a population of 70,000 can compete with New York equally. But it justs makes me feel like I am watching my kids play.. everybody has to win.. blech.

The NBA also has a salary cap and unless your GM /cap expert can make it work.. You can be like like the Knicks.. the team with the worse bunch of overpaid players because of the stupid signings and draft choices than any team in the NBA. I doubt if they had all the money to spend they will still be horrendous. The Sacramento Kings are in a small market and are the cusp of winning the NBA champioship over the last few years.. because of smart signings and draft choices. If they had more money could they be better... who knows. If the NBA were like MLB Sacramento would not even have a team.

The NHL also has a salary cap.. you have a team with the most money from cable, radio, merchandising ie the Rangers who worse than the Knicks. The devils who can't sell out their playoff games are Stanley Cup champs because again the smart dealings of their GM .

MLB has teams with high payrolls.. Dodgers, Mets, Rangers, Diamondbacks, who have no chance of winning this year.. why? stupid signings, players underacheiving, injuries. Do any people complain about them? I am happy the Rangers who signed A-Rod for 25 millon a year, last year signed Sun Yon Park for 8 millon a year, Flop. Mets signs Vaugn, Alomar, burnitz, Glavine for mega salaries.... flop.. the Dodgers who signs Kevin Brown. for 117 millon, their third baseman for millons flop, .
Remember the Marlins in 1997. they were drawing 35,000 peole a game.. Thet had a great team... then the owner wanted to sell..to make a big profit.. so he just sold of the team part by part.. to the point they were a bunch of young nobodies, even now they can't draw all of a sudden. So When the team does not win.. nobody shows up.. Just like the Yanks in the early 1990s.
So what I am saying that the Yankees have tons of money.. but they have a smart Gm who rarely makes a mistake of signing bums.
