Bartender Tipping

At a pool bar where you walk up, order your drink, take it and leave? You really tip for sodas there?
I didn't mean actually sitting at the bar but just getting a drink and walking away with it.

Yup!!! They preformed a service ... Why would leaving with a drink ( instead of staying ) be any different ? They poured, I bought , therefore tip.. No matter where I am drinking it.

I sure do tip for a soda ( which would be for the kids ) and ANY bar drink. If I am going to be hanging around awhile the first tip is generous, which usually guarantees great service and strong drinks .

Yes, we do the exact same thing. If they get it for me then they get a tip. That's what we do. We have also found a nice tip with our first round makes for faster service and stronger drinks in the next rounds!

Now...at Disney...you tip for a soda/pre-made drink at a pool bar...but this is the same kind of service I get a a CS place...they also get me my soda and even prepare my food but no tipping there. What's the difference? Does a bartender at a Disney poolbar get paid differently then someone working at a CS place? Sorry if these questions seem dumb...I'm just not used to the tipping practice and would simply like to do it right

Yes, a bartender will have a lower base wage than a counter-service cashier because he's in what is considered to be a tipped position.

Same deal as going into say a bar that serves food and I pre-ordered take out... It's at the bar, packaged.... I pay the bartender what ever the bill is a d leave ... no waitress involved... no tip either....

Well now you are confusing the situation. Many times that bartender is bagging your order, making sure it's right, putting the condiments in, (Ketchup, mayo, blue cheese, ranch), plastic tableware, napkins, so in that situation, yes I do tip.

Viewing what you saw really tells you nothing about the situation. What you saw IS something that will allow you to jump to conclusions.

I'm sure somebody has seen me get a beer and leave a 5 cent tip. What they didn't see though was me leaving a $10 tip when I got the last beer.

Making snap judgements based on a snapshot you saw is never a great idea, though, it is a very common one here on the Dis.[/QUOT


The bartender probably wouldn't have said something like thanks for nothing after the guy left if he had left him a nice tip earlier! (I don't remember the exact quote) I usually don't leave a big tip in the beginning in case someone else serves me the next time. They probably share tips but I want them to know I am not just leaving the change!

I always tip on a take out order. Not as much as I would if I ate there, but 10% or so.

I am from UK so the tipping at bars/pubs here works differently. Usually if you have a few rounds with the same bar tender serving you would say 'and take one for yourself'. They then either have a drink or add the amount to your bill and you pay straight away.
At Disney restaurants I always leave between 15 and 20 % depending on whether a buffet or not but have always been a bit confused about pool bars. So if I I get say a beer and 2 sodas which costs around $10 would I leave a $2 tip? Genuinely would like to know. I always leave something. Now when my 12 year old son goes up to get a soda using his own money thats a different matter. I cant imagine he would want to part with more cash than he needs to!!

That would be about right. My kids were taught how to tip at a young age but I would usually give them the money and tell them to let the bartender " keep the change" . It was rare that they were using their "own" money.

As some one also from europe. Tipping frustrates me. I see times where I personally feel i am being nickled and dimed. I for one would never tip for any pick-up where i go and get my own food. I also would not tip ( maybe keep the change) if i am relaxing on a pool chair, need to get up myself and walk to a bar to grab a sida that takes 2 secs to pour. If the bartender walked over to me and asked what can I get you that's a different story.

Maybe it's a mentality thing, but I often feel like everyone in the states in services are hawking for tips. Whether bell hop, bartender, consierge, room cleaning. etc. Like I said everywhere I turn it's a dollar here, 5 there. In the end it's like I feel I am being pulled under the table. Younsay my vacation is so much, but what he or she gets this and that.

My opinion, pay your people wages that they can live on. If they go beyond and offer additional service, then tip.

Well since your money ( against the dollar )buys more here the drink really does not cost you the same . Buy a Coke in a French sidewalk cafe and it will cost an arm and a leg .. 3 plus euros ( or more) for a tiny drink .

All that change really adds up for us bartenders. I don't turn my change into bills at the end of my shifts, I put it in my Disney fund. You wouldn't believe how much I've rolled the past few weeks

I spent a few weeks in Europe way over tipping a few years back and then felt strange when I finally got onboard with just leaving a euro or so in change. Is it the same in London?

If you are in a pub and only get one drink you don't need to tip. Infact I would say most people don't tip in pubs. At a lot of restaurants in London a 12.5% service charge is added to your bill so you wouldn't need to leave anything else but there are also a lot of restaurants that still don't add a service charge. i.e one of my favourite restaurants in London is a chain called Cote Brasserie. They are very reasonable but also very popular. They add 12.5% but I always leave extra as the service and food are always first class. Infact I am off there tonight and was also there on Friday.
