Hello, I'm new here. I have a friend who bartends at Disney World and I was able to get some information from him that may be helpful. I have seen some threads that might be confusing to guests planning a trip there so I wanted to clear things up. Bartenders' tips are NOT included into the price of the drinks when you pay. For example, at a pool bar or restaraunt bar the price advertised does NOT include tax and gratuity. When you are given the total after ordering your drinks, ONLY tax is included in that price. I guess he gets stiffed alot because guests think that gratuity has been added. Just wanted to clear up any confusion there might be. :)

I don't know why anybody would think otherwise, unless they're international travelers or never go to bars.

Welcome to the Disboards. Please read the sticky at the top of the page regarding tipping. Posting threads about tipping is not permitted here.

So, which bar do you...um, I mean your friend work? ;)

I have been sitting at bars where people leave the change. Especially the pool bars. I mean only the coins. They know tipping is not included. They just choose not to leave a real tip! I once was at the pool bar at CB and someone left a 13 cent tip. You dont need to remind this type of person because they know exactly what they are doing. If they didnt they would not leave anything!! Sorry for your friend but welcome to dealing with the public!!:confused3

There are some "cashless" resorts that include the tip and all cruise lines include the tips for drinks on the check. Perhaps some of these people don't realize it's not included. I tend to think people fall into two categories when it comes to bar tipping...they either do or don't.

Viewing what you saw really tells you nothing about the situation. What you saw IS something that will allow you to jump to conclusions.

I'm sure somebody has seen me get a beer and leave a 5 cent tip. What they didn't see though was me leaving a $10 tip when I got the last beer.

Making snap judgements based on a snapshot you saw is never a great idea, though, it is a very common one here on the Dis.

Why would you even bother to leave the five cent tip though? I don't get that.

Maybe because the beer came to $x.95 and they didnt want to carry around any change? I do it all the time. I hate change and usually just leave it at the table or the bar.

I've done the 13 cent tip per se... If service was terrible or slow... I want the bartender to know I didn't forget to tip, just that what I felt service was deserving of nothing... Pick up the pace.. Quit BS'ing with others and take care of your customers ....good quick service is worthy of a decent tip, keeping me standing and waiting because you're interested in something other than your job deserves nothing other than the nickel I left to remind you I didn't forget!

Well that makes perfect sense, but I wouldn't describe that as "leaving a five cent tip", it's more not taking your change.

It is 'not taking my change'. But the theme of my post is people making up their own perceptions of what someone else is doing.

Beeing from Europe we just don't tip as much...but when I'm at a bar in the US I always tip the bartender...BUT: at Disney the tipping thing made me think.
For example: when I order a margharita at la cava in Epcot the bartender mixes the drink for me, pours it and well-deserves a tip. Now getting a drink at a pool bar is different I think. Some are just ready-made cocktail mixes...bartender takes a plastic cup, places it unter a machine, pushes a button and out comes my cocktail. Do I really need to tip him then? If I order a soda at the very same pool bar the bartender does exactly the same...takes the cup, places is under the soda machine, pushes a button...but nobody would ever tip for a soda, right??? If they really mix the drinks, tipping is perfectly fine but with ready-made stuff I don't really see why I should tip/tip as much...or am I just terribly wrong here?

I sure do tip for a soda ( which would be for the kids ) and ANY bar drink. If I am going to be hanging around awhile the first tip is generous, which usually guarantees great service and strong drinks .

The bartender is to be tipped for any drink he serves.

At most resorts there is a store, or a self serve location to purchase beverages if you choose not to tip.

At a pool bar where you walk up, order your drink, take it and leave? You really tip for sodas there?
I didn't mean actually sitting at the bar but just getting a drink and walking away with it.
