It doesn't mention it in this particular article, but he said in one that he refused because he was "friends with Rosie."

Looks like someone else needs attention for their new cd. This guy is so high maintenance.

Singer Manilow sparks political feud with TV show
Mon Sep 17, 2007 8:59pm BST
LOS ANGELES, Sept 17 (Reuters Life!) - Pop singer Barry Manilow, a major Democatic fundraiser, said on Monday he has scrapped plans to appear on the television talk show "The View," because he did not want to be interviewed by its conservative co-host.

Manilow was scheduled to appear on the ABC morning show Tuesday, the same day his new album, "The Greatest Songs of the Seventies" hits stores. But those plans fell through because of his issues with Elisabeth Hasselbeck, an abortion opponent and supporter of the Iraq war.

"I had made a request that I be interviewed by (co-hosts) Joy (Behar), Barbara (Walters) or Whoopi (Goldberg), but not Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Unfortunately, the show was not willing to accommodate this simple request so I bowed out," he said in a statement on his Web site (http://www.manilow.com).

"It's really too bad because I've always been a big supporter of the show, but I cannot compromise my beliefs."

In an earlier statement to the news Web site TMZ.com, which broke the news, Manilow said Hasselbeck was "dangerous" and "offensive."

But a source close to "The View" said "we canceled him," because producers refused to comply with Manilow's "completely disrespectful" demands.

The source told Reuters that Manilow had appeared on the show twice in the past year when Hasselbeck was present, and had been booked for Tuesday's appearance since July. The source could not think of a similar incident with another guest happening in the past.

Manilow has been a generous contributor to Democratic Party candidates, according to data compiled by the Federal Election Commission.

This year, he contributed the maximum-allowable $2,300 each to the presidential campaigns of Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Joseph Biden, and John Edwards, as well as to Ron Paul, a maverick Texas Republican.

He has also been a big supporter over the years of U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, a California lawmaker on the left wing of the Democratic Party.

Manilow, whose biography says he has sold more than 75 million records worldwide, reached No. 2 on the U.S. pop album charts last year with his previous release "The Greatest Songs of the Sixties."

He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002, although many of his big hits -- such as "Mandy," "I Write the Songs" and "Looks Like We Made It" -- were written by other people.

ABC is a unit of Walt Disney Co (DIS.N: Quote, Profile, Research). Manilow Records for Arista Records, a unit of Sony BMG Music Entertainment.

His music has always been lame yet hummable.

But i agree with his decision not to perform on a program with a right wing reactionary mouthpiece who advocates our troops remaining in Iraq for an indefinite period of time with NO strategy in place.

Her opinions are "out there" and don't deserve mainstream access. Either she (or the program) should go away. Good for Barry & I hope others follow his lead.

I haven't read a single thing about "Rosie".

He politely asked (according to him) the producers to be interviewed by anybody but Elisabeth Haselbeck. Producers refused. He declined.

I agree with him 100%. Why should he have to subject himself to her rantings? He is at a point in his career where he doesn't need it. Hi "best songs of the 60's" was #2 on the pop charts. No reason to believe that "best songs of the '70s" won't do as well.

Bringing Rosie into it seems a bit of a stretch :rolleyes1

Simple request? He expects them to alter the show and kick a co-host out while he is there because he doesn't want to speak with them? Grow up Barry!!! :rolleyes1

Adults are able to speak with people who have different political views then themselves, they don't run away crying because people don't agree with them. Instead of taking this opportunity to talk about his views with her, he runs away. :rotfl2: WHINE WHINE CRY CRY There are a few other things I could call him ,but I just got a tag and don't want to lose it!! :lmao:

He probably did this on purpose. After all, he goes on the view and some people see him. He screams from the rooftops how he won't go on because the "devil" Elizabeth might not only be in the same room as him but may actually speak to him and it's all over the news. Does he have an album coming out or something? Sounds like a big ol publicity stunt to me.

Oh, and OP, how does Rosie figure into this? This has nothing to do with her. He is refusing to go on because of Elizabeth not Rosie.

She's been on that show for 6 years.
He knew she'd be on it when he agreed to it.
He did this as publicity stunt.

Would anyone else know that Barry Manilow had a new CD coming out today had it not been for this story?

For the record, I can't stand Elizabeth whatever her name is. Never seen The View, but from interview, she seems like one of these people who preach about cruelty to animals then would be dumb enough to wear a fur coat.

Well, sitting here with 'The View' on in the background I cannot say I am one-bit surprised if his issue is with Elisabeth! Where is that girls OFF button??

How can one person know EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING!?!?!?!?!
Or, at least THINK they do:rolleyes1

She interrupts and adds her 2-cents worth every single time there is a conversation going on!

I wish she would just go away!

I understand it as he didn't necessarily care if Hasselbeck was on the show, nor was he trying to censor her. He just didn't want her to do the main interview. He wanted the main interviewer to be one of the other women.

Sounds like her opinions are "out there" because you don't agree with them. :rolleyes1

And people have the nerve to say conservatives are intolerant:rolleyes1

I love Barry's music but this is over the top. How narrow minded that he wont allow himself to be interviewed by someone with a differing opinion then him. What is he afraid of, if he is confident in his opinions then it shouldnt matter if Elizabeth or anyone else if there. Does he live in a world that is that targeted that he only deals with people of his same mindset, how sad:sad2:

I mean just bc her viewpoints are different from his does not make her a bad interviewer, I am sure the topic was going to be about his new album and not his political views or at least I hope that is what I would tune in for.

I guess we wont be seeing him on Fox News anytime soon.:rolleyes1

Will he take my money for his new album if I dont agree with him? I bectha he would.

I'm puzzled as to why the title of this thread has Rosie's name in it.:confused3Nowhere in the article is her name mentioned as the reason BM doesn't want to appear.

If the CB does not get one Rosie thread per week it will self destruct..I thank

Really I thought the same about Rosie...

Apparently they're close friends.

When she has women troubles, he consoles her.
When has has men troubles, she consoles him.

I was going to say something like this too! The "tolerant" liberal won't be interviewed by someone who doesn't have the same beliefs! Not very tolerant of him! He's been on the show before, Susan Surandon has been on the show before, grow up!

Here's my two cents.

I think it's ridiculous that he only wants to be interviewed by certain hosts of the View. I would think it was just as ridiculous if it were a conservative who only wanted Elisabeth to interview him/her. That's just not how the show works.

I don't see the harm in someone with an opposing viewpoint interviewing him. I don't see how that compromises his beliefs in any way. He doesn't have to agree with Hasselback, just speak with her along with Joy, Whoopi, etc. Where's the harm in having a conversation with someone you don't agree with. I think this reeks of publicity stunt.

Eh. I don't care for Barry Manilow and I'm not a fan of Elizabeth either. If Barry doesn't want to be on The View because of Elizabeth that is his perogative, but I think this was a publicity stunt. I do watch The View, mainly because I love Whoopi and Joy...can't say I'm all broken up because Barry won't be on. His choice, but who really cares? :confused3

It seems that the show could easily have accommodated his request, though, by simply trying to schedule his segment on a day when Elisabeth was off on a personal day...she will be in the hospital or awhile to have a baby, I assume.

And in many of the interview segments, the only have 2 hosts doing the interview, usually Elisabeth and someone else...so what would be the big deal if they had two of the other hosts instead of Elisabeth?
